Old steering wheel-fixing cracks
by chevyman17

I have a banjo steering wheel for a 46-48 chevy and the wheel is in decent shape except for cracks(large and hairline) in the plastic outside ring(the wheel itself). Is there any certain repair material you can use to fix this-and then do you paint the rim or is there some other coating you use? - Any help would be apreciated - Thanks

Eastwood sells a repair kit for steering wheels. From what I understand, you bevel out the cracks and fill it in with expoxy. After it dries, sand it smooth. You can paint it with the regular paint, base coat/clear coat. Put several extra coats of clear on to prevent breaking thru to the base. This is my basic understanding of how it works.

I take it the wheels wood, not leather wrapped? If it was wrapped I think you'd be better off sending it out to get re-wrapped. Wood? I'd go with the Eastwood suggestion Lynn brought up.

The kit Eastwood sell has PC7 epoxy in it, available at most hardware stores. There is also some sandpaper, various grades, and a booklet with instructions. All you really need is the epoxy. I have been fixing them this way for 30+ years.
