I know ALOT of you don't require such an animal BUT being in the cold north and wanting to keep driving as late in the year as possible I need a heater. I was contemplating an "era" correct heater, or possibly one of Air Vintiques "compact units".....or maybe a scrounged one from the wreckers. Does anyone have any suggestions....experiences? Only about 15" or so across the back before running into venthand brake linkage and 11 or so inches before hitting the glovebox.
Thanks!

Beer or favorite beverage can, C-Clamp, match...cant go wrong! LOL just joshin' ya!
If ya find a under-dash A/C and heat unit out of a older 70's car your set. Had a A/C and heat setup both front and rear and buddy, both the AC and heat would run ya outta there!
Might just be the easiest way out for ya, with not alot of money invested.

I have an interesting heater from my 36 Chevy, I was thinking of puting it in my Deuce coupe. It is small and can fit anywhere under the dash. Check out the cars of the 30`s, They had small efficiant heaters.

I've run across this type heater on eBay quite a bit. Of course, there isn't any a/c.

I've been looking into the same thing. While not as cool looking as a '39 Buick heater, you might want to check these out:
I have a 83 or so Toyota pick-up truck heater in mine. It sits completly on top of the trans. hump. It's about 12" wide and 15-18" high. My heater hoses go thu the firewall. One on each side of the dist. Dave

Dave, was trying to keep it away from the center of firewall so that it dosen't get in the way of my vent/emerg brake system (under dash).
Thanks for the imput! Ken

Farm implement dealers have small heaters they use in the cabs of tractors. They are cheap and easily adapted to mounting most anywhere. Most have a door that opens and a round opening to hook a hose up to.

Then again, there's the old Model "A" flow thru (when the engine is running)system with the ribbed exhaust manifold and the little door on the firewall!! lol had to throw that one in since I relied on it for a year when in Alabama and the darned thing sorta worked! Fred :P

Yup, life in Edmondchuck sure mandates a rod with heat. Ever considered an electric heated snowmoble suit or a bikers heated vest? Cheaper in the long run but no comparison to real heeeet! Our "season" here in Vancouver goes almost year round with a few weekends off to let the cars "dry out" L O L !!

MYRIDE...did you finally track down a heater? I was cleaning up the basement this weekend and came across the original one from my '48. Brand new core in it, too. I can get the measurements for you if you'd like. I only want $100.oo for it, as that's what I paid for the new core.

My 40 GMC came with a "Chevrolet Super DeLuxe Heater", at least that's what it says on the shiny trim on the front of the three air doors It is 11" wide, 9" tall and sticks out 7" frome the firewall, it has a donut shaped core that encircles an integral 6v positive earth motor with an aluminum fan that was die cut out of sheet aluminum (or galvanized steel) it has outlets for defroster ducts which I use one of with a piece of VW heater duct tube and duct tape of course, for the plumbing. The core has the usual two water pipes that go through thfirewall as do two mounting studs that reciev acorn nuts on the engine side, It kicks so hot In the tiny cab, I leave the cowl vent open when it's on to "regulate" the heat. I have a PepBoys accessory clamp under the dash three speed switch. You've seen them, they have the brown plastic knob that fallsoff every time you bump it with your knee and the instrument light bulb that melts the plastic if you don't knock it off with your knee. I canned the bulb and epoxied the knob on. since the 12V system makes it run way too fast and "smell funny" real soon I just never run it on "high" whick is the full 12 volts, the rheostats in med. and low kick the volts down to a safe level. The biggest curiosity of the fan was, since I switched to negative ground the fan ran backwards and sucked air into the heater and blew it out against the firewall carpet. Thye motor has two wires coming out of it with one grounded so I swiched the two figuring that would reverse the rotation of the motor... It didn't....It must be wired like a starter motor with a field winding and an armature winding and revering them both just gets you the same thing.
SO, I grabbed a channel lock brand metal working tool and reversed the pitch of each of the sheet metal fan blades... works like a charm now.
Only drawback is my radiator guy said he couldn't get replacement cores so be carefull with it, and a Lowrider/restorer told me they sell for $300-$400 in the right market...
I'm keeping it!

That sounds like the ticket DrJ. I have a line on a heater from one of our fellow rodders, not the same model as yours but should work! I'll keep that trick with the fan blade pitch in mind once I hook it up.

Fill us in on this $40 fee. I was going to send something to someone in a really nice neighborhood, and he said not to send it UPS, as the driver always expected a 'tip'. This isn't the same thing you're talking about, is it?

UPS, FedEx, etx. all charge a huge fee for customs brokerage. Pain in the butt if you ask me.
btw...MYRIDE, that '48 Chev heater I have measures 10.5" tall, 9.5" wide, and 7.5" deep.

Our shop just ordered and received a set of gears and rear-end overhaul kit from a prominent gear company in Washington. Shipping was $104.00 US, or $165.00 Cdn!! I was happy with the turnaround time, 3 days, but for that price I could have driven down myself and picked them up. They claimed they can only ship to Canada using UPS Express. They never bothered to mention that when I ordered them. What a crock of sh*t. Ground shipping would have been a third the cost.

I had a shifter sent to me I had purchased. They charged the shipper 23.00 US and when it arrived I had 24.00 Can in GST and other costs AND 40.00 Can "Brokerage/Handling" fees.
Cost me more to ship UPS than the shifter cost! I'd rather wait the extra cple of weeks rather than get hosed by UPS.

Why make such a big deal about it?
all a heater is, is a fan & motor that still works (preferrably without squeeking) and a small radiator core that isn't plugged up and doesn't leak... Oh. and a box or frame of some kind to hang the two of them up under the dash...
That really is all ya need. especially in a small car. Oh yea,, a funnel shaped thingy mounted in front of the core with a hose going up the the driver's side defroster outlet...
