At the show last weekend in Clarkesville last weekend we saw a 1974 Nova with a factory 4 banger in it (rated at 90 hp). Has anybody seen one of these? In the day of more power somebody actually put about 300 of these together(according to the owner)...I was stunned. I was looking for the standard 350 and here comes this thing.Go figure!!

Memory tells me that the 153 was '62 through '69 or '70. Started out as the ultra economy deal. I have one in the track roadster I'm doing and have a couple spares just in case. They were really lost in a Nova engine compartment.

Charlie--You probably already know this but you can get a head (if they are still available) for your Chevy II 4 banger from Mercury Marine. They have bigger ports and 202 valves if memory serves me right. A lot of guys around here used them in the midget racecars.

Didn't the fuel crunch hit around 73 or 74 and Detroit started making cars with better fuel economy? Of course I'm much too young to remember those years too clearly (lol)but I do remember waiting in long lines at the gas stations and only being able to get gas every other day depending on whether your tag ended in an even number or odd. We were living in CA at the time.

Yep. 72-80 were probably the worst cars Detroit ever put out. The changes were supposed to increase fuel economy & reduce emissions but the cars were so underpowered that you had to burn more gas to get them up to speed or pass than you were saving on the road.
What a joke!
Hot Rod mag azine back in the mid 70's actually did some tests where they took a small block & added high performance parts and tuned them like a rodder would and actually got better gas mileage & fewer emissions than the factory motor with more power.
