Coming Soon- Boydster Woodie!
by Slammin

Just read in SRM that Boyd not only plans to keep the Boydster (0032 AMBR Deuce Roadster) glass body/chassis packages coming (limited edition) but will be out with a Boydster Woodie limited edition here real soon. From the Foose artist rendering it looks super trick!

Wont be long now and they'll be out. Price tags a bit hefty for the packages though at a base line of 32 Grand!!

By the looks of this woodie I'm gonna have to bust the piggy bank open soon! Super Kool!!

ho hum...it might as well cost a million, as far as I'm concerned. That's way out of my price range. Do you want wheels with that?? LOL.

I saw the pics too, and it's a beautiful car.

But forgive me if I add that the Boyd cars, along with the $$$ and extreme bodies from Coast-to-Coast, Zipper, Rat's Glass, etc. are, IMO, outrageous to wear well. They are caricatures of cars. They lack the grace, flow of line, and timeless quality of rodded stockers. I don't think many of us could get visual pleasure in them day-after-day for years.

And, personally, they make me kinda sick. These builders are institutionalizing our hobby, turning it into a corporate act, and are polarizing rodders. We've seen it at every show we go to.

One group is like ours here at this forum, cars that a drivers built by rodders who actually get pleasure out of turning a bolt and for whom their rod has become a piece of themselves.

The others are fat-wallet individuals hiring pro-built stationary sculpture that bears only a resemlance to actual automobiles and which have no emotional association whatever for the owner.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

You aint alone on this. The fat wallet gold chainers don`t know what they are missing by NOT building their own, They missed the boat completely. I watch as Goodguys only picks those kinds of rods and calls them trend setters in their award ceramonies. They should look a little closer at the home built cars. Magazines should also pick up on the home builders, It would help their circulation. Pesonally I find those billion dollar cars extremely boring. Drive em like ya hate em, Instead of pushing them into the cushy trailers. I`ll probably get some flak for saying this, But hey, I know I ain`t alone either. ...Hold on while I cinch up my flak jacket....lol

I agree with guys completely, Sure it's a beautiful car, and I can appreciate it, but It would just drive me nuts to know that anyone could buy a cookie cutter duplicate. Isn't that how rodding got started, people wanted to make there cars unique(and fast, my favorite part).

Part of Rodding for me has always been doing the work, choosing the parts, the look and the style of my cars, it's putting your personality in to it, that's what makes it unique. When someone compliments you on your car it gives you a personal satisfaction, that someone else appreciates your work and descisions. Someone compliments you on a Boydster its great for Mr Boyd, but it has no value to the owner, at least it would not for me.

Everyone who knows me and the ole black traditional cars I drive, knows that I would not be into the C To C, Speedstar, and Boydster type cartoon cars. The reason that these freaks are selected for the GG awards, magazine features and all the other kudos is very simple. Money. These manufacturers advertise heavily with the magazines, buy expensive vendor spaces at the shows and lobby the 'selectors' for awards and acceptance.

Magazine and industry types are looking to expand the cirulation and partcipation ( more $$$ ). Home built vechicles, while beening more useful and streetable, are not as exciting to the new converts or those checkbook rodders. The Oakland Roadster Show's Most Beautiful Roadster for 2002 is in a big storage building about 10 miles from my home. $400 -$500 grand spent at least. It was built by Don Pinkerton in Ohio. Sitting beside it, there is a $350 thousand 32 5W coupe. Pinkerton built it too. Extremely nice Deuces, both of them. What good are they? Too much $$$ spent to drive and enjoy. In the owners defense, he can afford this large amount like I can afford the cars I have. The money he spent is pocket change to him.

I guess all folks like us can do is work on our stuff, drive and enjoy it, and let the gold chain, big checkbook folks spent their money $$$. The cartoon cars will not live long term and the people who have them are buried $$$ in them. So be it.

Wow,We always appear to come around to this subject of money and how its used.I cannot agree more with the individuality of building your own rod.Can you imagine spending a large amount of coin knowing at any major show there can be 10 or more just like yours! However not everybody in this hobby can bolt, weld, tune, graft,or even paint for themselves. I can respect the guy who builds what he can and farms out the rest, that doesnt take away any of the cudo's the car or owner have coming. What pis#@& me off is the guy who wrote the check and turns his nose up at you if you have a question. Maybe they just are'nt having as much fun as the rest of us. Its like I said before,it takes all cars, trailered and drivin,to make a show.however, driving on your way you ARE the show!!!

Having had said this, the Boyd car is sweet to look at.I maybe will even pick a thing or two to use in the future. But it will still be mine, not his!!!

Happy trails,
Woody

I think the main difference between the checkbook rodders and those of us on this site is what we would do with $100,000 plus. Most of us would prefer to use the money (or at least some of it) to build a better shop than to buy a turnkey rod from So-Cal or one of he name builders. While I can appreciate the art of some of these "freakish" kit cars, I'm always going to appreciate the work of the home builder more. Craftsmanship is what I look for in cars. That's where real street rodding is at, despite what some magazines may be touting. My two cents worth.

Well, gee guys...I'm sorry. I hadn't even laid eyes on the car when I wrote my first post. I just happen to agree with Dooce about the caricature part. All I had to do was hear the name. "Caricature car" is the perfect phrase Dooce; maybe the car shows can start a new class. IMO, they hardly resemble the cars that they are supposed to be.

If we wait long enough, maybe that '37 Ford Caricature car will look more like an '88 Taurus. WOW! Won't that be slick.

Okay, ed, I'm heading out to the bunker. See ya there.
