Well the 50 Ford finally made it here today. The delivery driver said that the battery was dead and that he'd have to jump start it. He hooked his box to it and it started right up. When I got home 2 miles, I switched it off, then back on and it started fine. 10 minutes later the battery was flat dead again. Not even a click of the starter. I got my charger out and went to hook it up to the 6V battery and noticed that it is hooked up backwards. Were the 50 fords positive ground? or has some one hooked it up backwards by mistake? Guess I've got a lot to learn about 6V cars. Anyway thanks for the help

Fords were 6 Volt Positive ground until 1955.

Thanks for the quick response. Guess I'll have to order a repair manual. The battery charger keeps kicking off as if it's over loading.

Fred, can you tell me how to set up the voltage regulator for 9.5V output? Would like to upgrade to 8V battery and was told that I would have to change the regulator output for proper charging.

Rob, take the cover off of the voltage regulator, next to one of the coils inside should be an adjustment screw. Hook a volt meter up to the battery and with the motor running about 2000 rpm, tighten the screw until the voltage reaches 9.5

I believe that the regulator should also be warmed up first.

Since it is a 50 Ford, with a flathead, and I'm planning a retro-ride, I thought I'd warm it up in a more traditional way,...an old fashion engine compartment fire! lol
