Me and brakes these days...LOL

Another brake question, boys....Gotta put new rear drums on my ride...2000 Dodge Caravan (seriously outta round and they shake the livin' bejeezes out of ya when ya give 'er the Whoa....and from what I've seen before on other cars, if ya get 'em turned more than once, in time they'll just get back outta round and chatter your teeth out to the point you'll get fed up and put new drums on anyway and take a 20 minute break during the swap and go visit your dentist for new teeth since you broke 'em off trying to stop.) Anyway, I figured nows a prime time to give 'em a bath in some paint to match the exterior colors (going detail crazy this year for some odd reason).

Could I get by with squirting them the factory exterior paint color (Inferno Red Pearl) or maybe white or orange to match the graphics to carry through the color scheme to the rest of the van, or do I need high temp paint seeing how they're getting warm when I do the stop and go driving. Dont want 'em to start bubbling, peeling or anything like that. Plan to buy wheel dust covers (drilled/slotted maybe) and paint 'em for the front or maybe get the drilled/slotted combo and leave 'em polished till I round up the funds to hang new cross drilled and slotted rotors. If the factory red wont give me any ugly results after I run this thing around I'll paint 'em to match....graphics were done in House of Kolor and PPG colors. Will it work or should I not even bother? Worse comes to worse...Powder Coat?

Rattle can'em.........If the drums are getting hot enough to burn the paint, then you got other problems to worry about. Rotors are another story however......
And I can't see any reason NOT to turn them as long as they are still under the minimum diameter spec. Unless of course you got lots o money you want to get rid of.........If thats the case, come to Ohio and I will help you out with that excess money problem............

I'm curious about the graphics on your van, My wife has an 01 caravan and other than painting the stone deflecter to match the color of the van and running boards the same, I can never find anything to dress this thing up a little so it don't look like 2 million other caravans.. On the brakes remember the rear brakes only do about 20% of the braking, but working in the trade, I have not had much luck turning drums, or rotors for that matter, they do not seem to last very long after turning till, that old dancing comes back, I believe that it is somewhat caused by the much harder metalics used in the linnings causing more heat just an opinion no facts to back that up. On my own I never turn these when out of round, I just replace them, not all that more expensive than turning anyway, Painting them, if you really want to be sure of a good job powder coat is the best way but, many people would think us car nuts are nuts to powdercoat brake drums on our daily driver, hell maybe we are a bit nuts but, I like my wifes van to look good too even if it is a Dodge caravn I have to drive in it too.. I just use some urathane to paint them (drums) to match. it will last for quite a while, heck I paint engines with urathane and they get as hot as brake drums.. Oh Yah I'm curious what did you do to your mother-laws-daughter in high school ....Fatchuk

Jim- Thanks bud, I was just wondering if under normal "warm" conditions (no brake heat problems on it..thank God) I would have to worry about painting these things 20,000 times if normal heat would blister or peel the paint. Looks like I'll be getting a hold of the Dodge dealer and get some of the Inferno Red this week if they dont give me some astronomical outrageously high price. Wonder if they'll sell spray cans? Or do I have to try and match a parts store rattle can and pray it's no huge difference between the factory color and whats in the can? Wonder if DupliColor makes my color?

Chuck- I had a local friend of mine, and custom painter/custom bodyman of 40 years, Tom Downey out of Baltimore MD. paint my graphics. We used GM Corvette White (mid 90's ZR-1 color if memory serves me) out of the GM paint chart, and House of Kolors "Tangelo Pearl". Once it was laid out on paper (to see if I liked what I saw) and on the van itself with 3M fine line, we covered everything up not to be painted and sprayed both lines white (even the orange has a white base under it so it would really be bright out in the sun), Once the orange and white were down, we laid pearl clear over everything (one way you look at it depending on the light, both colors have a yellow tint, one way a red tint, another way a orange tint) Then laid a pinstripe outline around the White in '1-Shot' Orange, and the Orange got outlined in '1-Shot' Blue. While we were at it, the more we looked at it after we got it outside in the parking lot after 2 days worth of work, the graphics needed something else to make 'em pop. So seeing how we got the case of the "Might as wells" we were two seconds from pulling out a handfull of other colors and going hog wild, but instead, started flipping through one of the recent months (at that time) Truckin' Magazine or Lowrider Mags, and on page 2 we saw a pinstripe technique known as 'barb wire striping' and I was floored..didn't need to go through the rest of the book..had to have it no matter what (first, and ONLY one (so far) around town with it...and I'm getting stopped at redlights getting compliments, in parking lots, at car shows and cruises...so it looks like we hit the nail pretty good.) so we gave it a go and tried it. This is where you lay a line down around a graphic per sae, and every little bit flick a little line off here and there to give it the appearance of barb wire. I have some closeup shots if you wanna take a peek, I'll E-Mail 'em to you.

Worked for me! Probably within the next 2 years or so it'll be a whole new color scheme. Dont wanna keep it the same for long..LOL

A tip that I've always gone by is to not apply your parking brake when your drums are hot...they may cool 'out of round.' I seldom use the parking brake on my auto trans vehicles.

Grant, I painted the drums in the Roadrunner with Eastwood's cast grey (rattle-can), four years ago and they still look fine. As for the street rod, I had them (rotors)powdercoated, but have 0 miles.

I doubt Eastwood would have a new Dodge color, so I'm gonna give the parts store a shot, if they dont have the color I want, I'll get with my local Dodge'm dealer. If THEY dont have what I want, I'll yank 'em off and do it Fred Flinstone style once I get the two holes punched out in the floor. LMAO

Grant, years ago when I was re-doing a 66 Mustang, I went to the local auto paint store and had them put the original interior color into spray cans. Made the job much easier. With your new color, I don't know if you can get the color in one can or not.

Slammin, in my remaining lifetime, I would never...never...never...ever...ever...consider turning drums or rotors, even once.

Twenty five years ago, my mechanic did a goverment safety check on my used car. He insisted on turning the rotors and I assumed they were well within specification, so no problem. A month latter with this car, when I had to do a panic stop, me and the car simply shook like hell, until the vehicle was now facing 45 degrees and headed for the ditch. Luckly for me I kept it to the shoulder of the road. If it veers the other way, I'm into on coming trafic and taking down an innocent party.

After the incident and wake up call, only new rotors or drums for me, everytime. They are usually fairly cheap, anyway. I don't waste my money anymore or care to die early.

how are 2000 dodge vans and hot rods related ?
and why are the drums worn out after only 3 years ? been leaving the parking brake on ? there must be a serious fault somewhere for drums to fail so early warrentty ?

When I got the thing (2000 Dodge Caravan) in April, 2001 from the 'local' (Glen Rock Pa...just north of me in Baltimore Md.) handicapped van dealer, it had a very mild (almost un-noticeable) chatter in the rear brakes, well I figured seeing how it was only taken for test drives once in a blue moon..and sat parked the rest of the time (300 miles on it when I got it) it'd work it's way outta this chatter and everything would be fine once it got some miles on it, had it back and the brakes checked up fine..didn't show no real signs of being out of round at all (minimal at best), so we left well enough alone..well in time, got progressively worse and I'm finally tired of chipping teeth, so it's time to fix it.

"How are 2000 Dodge vans and hot rods related?".......this IS my hot rod...daily driver/weekend terror...and I have fun with it! Work in progress, so to speak that'll be done just the way I see it fixed up in my head within the next year or two. You can find me every week at a show or cruise somewhere within 100 miles of home, and everywhere I go it gets the looks, cause you very rarely see a modern day van fixed up.

Yep....stuck in a wheelchair, thats why I got it, I dont think I'd go and spend $49,800 just to do it LOL. Bought it with everything ready for me to cruise. Hand controls on the column, electric pass. side sliding door, electric ramp and jack screws on the rear that squats the whole thing down as the doors opening and the ramp folds out.

Wiring nightmare....but I dont have to worry, If by chance theres a problem with anything on the handicapped conversion end of it, we head north to Glen Rock, PA where I bought it. They'll fix it...
