34 Running Board Question

Throwing this out for your guys thoughts. I'm running full fenders on my 34ford. I want to make them one piece from the rear fenders forward and do away with the seam where the 2 pieces meet. Have seen some cars with them done this way and looks nice and clean. My question is should I glue them together at the seam with vette adhesive or something like that and then bolt them together with maybe a metal plate on both sides to keep things from flexing and causing a crack where the seam is. Open to suggestions good or bad.

I had a car years ago with painted running boards. Looked good.......until some child stepped up on them and ruined the paint. Now everything I own with boards has rubber on them.

As a side note, I now think that rubber boards make the car look more real........less cartoonish or showcar only. A guy here in town had a StreetBeast and he had a hard time keeping the bad places off his boards. He finally sold and built a Deuce...with rubber boards.

yeah, i gotta say that i dont go for painted running boards. But i kinda tend towards nostalga type cars rather than hi-tech stuff. No offense, but i think painted boards make the car look more 'plasticky'.

Bob-I would glue and bolt them together on the car and when that is cured, take them off and glass the backside with several layers and several inches past the joints.
You might also think about adding a little more reenforcement from the frame under the joints. Limiting the flex will be very important. You will need to grind and glass the top too but just to hide the seam. I think it would be wise to do that when they are back on the car and lined up. Good Luck.

One thing I forgot. Don't use metal for reenforcing any place that shows. Fiberglass and metal do not expand and contract at the same rate and you can get hairlin cracks.
