Rebuilding an Edelbrock 4-brl carb...

The 625 CFM carb I have was rebuilt 2-3 yrs ago but the motor was not run much & the gas dried out while sitting last winter. The needle valve was stuck & now, while it runs OK, it will flood the bowl allowing gas to seep out of one of the shaft ends on the passenger side. It does this if I let it stand with the key on (electric fuel pump running). NOT a situation I like to think of having gas dripping onto the motor! But, again, it only leaks out if let standing with the FP on & the motor NOT running. The in-line fuel pressure regulator is set low -->3 lbs.

I called & got $300+ quotes to rebuild the thing, which more than buying a new one. Seems that the recourse is to buy new, being cheaper, but if you are careful and rather mechanical, can the carb be rebuilt w/o too much hassle if you get a rebuild kit. I feel rather confident, but when there is a $350 price quote to do the rebuild, it must be rather involved & I wonder if I might be pouring money down a carburator hole!??

Let's hear it from someone having some experience or advice. Thanks, Fred

Not much to those carburetors. I say get a kit. Those prices are crazy!

Pick up a kit, look at the blown up picture of the carburetor and parts, get a nice flat and clean work area and go to town. I like tell everyone to get a cookie sheet pan "the kind with the raised area around the pan" and place the carburetor in the middle. Now when you take it apart, the parts will all stay in the pan and you don't have to worry about them falling on the floor. Make sure you get a small parts basket with the carburetor cleaner and place the main body of the carburetor upside down in the solution that way the crud falls off and away from the carburetor.

Ed's are super easy to rebuild and tune. Go for it.

The pan suggestion is great. Something I always do is secure the pan or what ever you are working in to the bench or table you are working on.
This saves you from upsetting the whole apple cart accidentally. Been there. Done that.
