I have a '61 impala bubbletop that I've got a 350/350 combo ready to go into. What type of advice does anyone have that might be helpful with this swap?

Easy swap. If it had a 6 banger just move the mounts. You may want to change the gear indicator, I believe C.A.R.S. sells them for glide to turbo sawps.

The car was a 283 so that part is easy...what I'm curious about is tranny mount, linkage, etc. etc., etc.,. I live in the middle of nowhere and no one here has any of this kind of information. The turbo 350 I have is 28" long but I have no idea what the lenght of the 'glide was. the car was set up for that but it's gone!

The two transmissions are close but not the same. You will probably have to move the tranny mount a little. You can use the same one but you will have to drill different holes in the frame. It's been a long time since I have been under one of those early Impalas, but even if you have to fabricate a new transmission mount, it should not be a big deal.

I have abs of steel. For the protection of others, they are covered with padding.

Thanks much,

We looked things over again and looks like we need to modify the tranny mount a little. Moving it back is not really an option as it's the old style one that hangs off of tabs welded to the frame, with long bolts that run thru it front to back horizontally.

A tab welded on the bottom extendining toward the rear should take care of it.

The drive shaft will need to be cut about an inch.

P.S. Good line about the abs...I'm gonna use that if ya don't mind!

Howdy,

Just thought I'd update you on the tranny swap...It's a bolt in. We installed the engine/tranny today...didn't have to change a thing. We already had shift linkage in hand for this swap and the speedo cable hooked right up as well though we'll probably have to change out the gear on the tranny. We will have to shorten the driveshaft a bit (1-2 inches) though! No biggie!!!

Thanks for the input,
Ozman
