Cross-steer rack & pinion

Speedway Motors just sent a mini-catalog that has a "cross-steer rack and pinion" setup that will bolt right up to a Vega-box mounting plate. $329.95.

Does anyone know anything about this ... and whether it might help relieve the hard-steering problem I've got with a Vega cross-steering setup on my Deuce?

Hot Rods and Horspower also offer one. I have only seen pictures in magazine adds but it loohs like it has a "boot" that will extend out under the frame.

My 32 has Vega cross steering. It is a little "tight" in parking lots but otherwise works quite well. I have stock box which is a little slower (and easier to turn) than some of the aftermarket repros.

Most rodders who have Vega steering do NOT have a high effort like you comment on (at least the ones I know).....

My 32 Roadster w/Vega box drives like power steering. The stock 40 Ford does also. The kingpin/wheel rim relationship is very important in getting low effort Vega steering. If you draw a straight line right thru the kingpin boss of the axle to the rim....it should hit the center of the rim. If it hits the inside offset of the rim.......theres a lot of the problem. Smaller diameter steering wheels also lessen the leverage and add to the difficulty. Wide tread tires also contribute to the effort.

Both the 32 and 40 run the same wheels/rims/spindle combo.

Deuce, you've told me this before and I should've followed your advice then. After changing to smaller tires (which helped some), I'm ready now.

The obvious solution would be front rims with less set-back, but ... I've got GM disks in front and the diameter won't fit inside the 14" wheels the car is running. Hate to have to change rims AND tires! I wish there were a simpler solution. (IS there?)

I have used a rear steer GM Citation mounted to the rear of the 4" dropped axel on my '33 pickup for probably 10 yrs now. It works well--steers & handles much better/easier, is pretty easy to install, and costs little $, just a few hours of work!

The '33 steers quite easy. Fact is it steers easier than my '90 Nissan which has a 4 cyl engine with a lot less weight up front! I know another fellow using the same setup on his '30 A-roadster Pickup. His system works exceptionally well too.

Saw one on a car last month. It was a roadtest for the device. Owner of the car said that it worked well and his only complaint was that it slightly reduced the turning radius.
