I'm looking at replacing the fenders on my Chevy. It seems as though everyone one of them has had major damage under the several layers of paint. I'm also finding lots of old Bondo. So the question is: How good are the Fiber glass fenders? Do they match up good? Will they hold up good? The ones I'm looking into are sold

as long as you protect the underneath with something flexible like cork or rubber etc as the stones will cause stars in the paint no matter how thick they are
also when you bolt them on spread a thin layer of filler all along the bolt line and bolt them on
lay a layer of plastic on the other surfaxe otherwise you are effectively glueing them on
when dry pull off and you will have a perfect mateing surface that you can do bolts up tight without putting stress cracks in the fenders
also when drilling holes there is a tech article on here but I have found it is better to use a masonary bit as hss is usually to sharp

Man, they're horrible. They'll crack and split. I always pass on glass.
Just kidding. Do you know how many cars are either fiberglass or have fiberglass body parts? Plenty. You'll do just fine with glass fenders.

Thanks for the advice. Now if I can just justify the cost with the wife? Any complaints from anyone on using Chevy's of the 40's? So far the parts I've only heard positive about them.
Thanks!

Only positive experiences with them while I owned my 47 Chevy.

Your "top-less" cruzn buddy, Denise
Just a suggestion.. Several guys around here have taken fenders and running boards to the truck bed liner place and had them coat the underside. So-far, it has eliminated the dreaded "stars"

Kelly, I have glass fenders on my '39 Chevy and I don't like the way the fronts fit...too big a gap between the fender and the hood side. I have been looking for steel fenders but the cost of good ones have held me back.

At the risk offending all the experts here, (common thing as of late) Glass is a great replacement and in most cases, cheaper . If you have fit problems you can use Vette panel adhesive to fix any problems you have. I call it "car in a can".

the beauty of glass is it is literally cut and paste if the gap is to tight trim a bit off to wide add a bit can't expect a perfect fit out of the box
spent the last few days fabricating a high stop brake light out of glass
used the light out of the parcel shelf of a lexus took the cover peeled off the fabric added some balsa with some bog and glassed over the top instant one off custom item
resined in some bolts drilled some holes added some glossy paint and it looks like a factory item
to do the same in steel would have taken me weeks this only took hours and i have some real complicated curves

I don't think the panel adhesive would work on the fender, but it might work extending the hood side to meet the fender. The gap is about about a half inch and raising the fender lip wouldn't look good. Thanks for the suggestion.

Try Duraglass for filling gaps in fiberglass, it has the same expantion rate as fiberglass resin, it has small glass fibers in it for strenth. Duraglass is stronger than Bondo but doesn't finish as smooth.[pin holes] but use it to do all the body work on glass and scimm coat Bondo on the top for finer finish. The above info was given to me from a Fiberglass body building company.

I agree with Croozer. The Vette panel adhesive is really quite the item. Check fit on all the pieces and trueness of the frame. I might be able to find those fenders. Steel ones.

My opinion, "For what it's worth".........(Buffalo Springfield?)........Duraglass is great stuff. I used some when I had to basically "rebuild" the 'Old Chicago' fiberglass rear fenders and running boards for my coupe. I had bad luck with that particular manufacturer AND the owner. I matched them up to 'Downs Manufacturing' front fenders which I had great luck with. The fronts were well built, thick, and tough. They matched up to the body and my radiator shell like a dream.
Maybe I just got lucky with Downs, I don't know... but if I ever have the need to buy glass fenders again, it'll be Downs....I also have a couple friends who speak highly of Superior Glass too.

Don't just add some filler as it has no strength grind some of the glass back and add some matt then a thin layer of filler etc there is a very good how to on this site in the article section
Nothing is easier than making things out of fibreglass just messy
I use balsa to get my basic shape for small items as it is incredibly easy to work with all you need is a razor blade and some sandpaper then the resin soaks into it making it as strong as steel

I showed this shot a while back, some yound girl applying make-up while driving didn't see me stopped in traffic. thankfully i was checking my mirror for just such an occurance and saw her coming. I only had time to stand on it and pull over to the left, a gully stopped me from getting any farther away from her.
We had to purchase a new glass fender from AI and then widen it an inch and a half, used paint sticks bonded to the underside of both halves of the fender to keep an even gap, then used matt, etc and rebuilt the fender. Would have cost an arm and a leg to repair or replace a steel 32 Chevy fender.
