I've been using One Suite www.onesuite.com) for a couple of years now. 2.5 cents/minute long distance and no monthly fee. Only catch is that you have to prepay ($10, $20, etc.), but we've never had any problems. Then again, we finally broke down and got a cell phone a couple months back and we do most of our calling on it now since it's "free".

Here's a good one if available in your area and you do enough long distance to cover the marginal few extra dollars for you local service and if available.

I recently signed up with MCI (in October) as my local company and they will give me the exact same features as Bell South and for about $10 more a month.......all the long distance I can stand....it's free! It's called the Neighborhood complete plan for $49.99. I get three-way calling, speed dial, voice mail, caller ID, call waiting ID with forwarding...and I average over 1500 minutes of long distance. Even with the cheapest plan I save at least $50!

You might want to check at 1-888-624-5622 at MCI if available. Probably only in and around bigger cities!

The industry is certainly cut throat ot this time...I thought MCI is owned by Worldcom, which as you know, is very shakey at present so these deals are probably a desperate way of getting cash flow. The risk that everyone takes in using cheap carriers is that they might not be around tomorrow and if you have gone as far as being pre selected to them you might end up with no service when they pull the plug.

YOu are right about WorldCom and the MCI connection. Having worked in the Telephony industry for 15 years I do not fret this connection at all! I know enough about MCI to figure out that it is an asset (actually making money) of the company that will keep running no matter what. If World Com goes, the court will keep the asset up and running and will try to offload it against liabilities. So, I don't think there is a chance for it just to belly up and disappear overnight. There is greater risk in my opinion going with some of the smaller long distance companies. Especially the ones that are just aggregate buyers of switch time. These guys come and go with the speed of light. The have no capital equipement, piggyback on someone elses backbone, then when times get tough.....bail and leave their customers without a long distance plan. They simply go down the street, open the doors under a differing name and voila.....back to the same ole same ole!

Meantime.......great deal me thinks.
