When I was 17 in 1974, my Grandfather gave me a '65 Caddy Convertible. My friend was doing an oil change on his car and asked if I needed one on mine. I said sure and asked him to do a flush too. He did!
Only it was with the water hose ......

Working as an auto tech,I get to see some real messes that others get into. Have a good friend in law enforcement, who loved to try to do as much work as he could on his cars, but he really has no concept at times. He called me last year with questions about flushing his cooling system on his 2 year old Olds.Wanted to know why,if he had the garden hose hooked up and turned on,there wasn't any water or coolant coming out of the radiator top. Then he casually mentions that when he tried to start the engine, nothing happened. No cranking,no nothing.I knew then he was in deep do-do. Had the car towed to my shop, where I discovered, that instead of putting the flushing "T" in one of the heater hoses, he had installed it in the large vacuum line that supplies the power brake booster!!! ALL that water had gone into the engine thru the intake and had hydro-locked the cylinders!!
Had to take all the plugs out, roll the engine over(which shot water to the ceiling)and do 3 oil changes to get the remaining water out. That put an end to his home auto repairs..............

That sounds like a good reason to work on your own car, Al.
If I had a friend that flushed the crankcase with a water hose, I think there would be other indications that his marble bag had a hole in it.

We bought a 74 Valiant 4door for $40. The rear lug studs were broken off for some reason, so we welded the rim on the hub. The front tires were flat, and eventually just became rims after a little driving. We made a convertable out it with a axe and a splitting maw. Ran the engine on Paint thinner and sold grafitti rights to the neighboorhood kids for a dollar each. Then sold rides on the top as a sled to the same kids. Made our money back, sold the engine for $75 later.

A friend and myself cut the top off my 40 Ford deluxe 2dr sedan because I was in envy of his 56 Ford cnv. Don't get to nervous this was in 1957 and I had bought the car for $ 75.00 .Drove it around all summer and fall { doors flew open often } and sold it for $ 75.00 when winter came ! If I had it today with the top on it would fetch 8 / 10,000. bucks .. BOO HOO HOO ! Wink

My buddy cme up with a terrific offer about 30 years ago. He said he'd go in half with me on a floor jack and I could keep it if he could use my garage once in a while to change his oil. Great. First time he tried to change the oil, he pulled the plug while he was under the car, dropped the plug, got drowned in oil and of course spread 4 quarts all over my garage floor. Never came back. I still have the jack. Cost me $17.50 and a bag of Zorball.

MY good buddy had a '50's vintage Dodge that he was going to change the freeze plugs on. He called me and said that there was "rust" around the edges where the new plug would go and wanted to know how to remove it. I sugested he use emory cloth, no good he said, it must be some of the old plug. I said use a punch to knock out the old plug. When he finally convinced me to come and help him, he showed me a cup type freeze plug, except that his motor had disc type. He knocked a hole in the block trying to remove the "rust" with the punch I sugested. The SOB sued me to replace his block because I GAVE HIM BAD ADVICE!! The judge however dismissed the case. I now do not give any "advise."

I made the big mistake of useing my Zippo lighter to see how my radiator level was.Back then I was useing the cheaper version of anti-freeze which was basically alcohol. The vapor lit up in my face, taking all facial hair and scorching my eyes.It was a lesson hard earned.Thought I was blind that day.
