I am in the process of changing rear gears. I am going from a 2:42 Posi to ? I have a set of 3:08's and a set of 3:73's. In a 2400 pound car with a 350 HP SBC and a TH350. What set would you think be the best all around, Some freeway, mostly street. I was thinking the 3:73's would work best when I put in the 700R4. But then again in a light car like mine I wouldnt need that high a gear no matter what tranny I run. Ideas??

My Willys tips the scale at 2450 lbs. and I am running 4:10's. I have a 700R tranny and 31" tall tires. Pretty snappy around town and cruises on the freeway at 2400 rpm @ 70 mph. in fourth gear. The 3.73's should be fine!

Here's a neat caculation tool to give you some numbers to work with.
Patrick, my 39 Chevy tudor is running a 350/700R4 with a 3:08 gear. Milage at highway cruising is about 23 [averaging about 70 MPH] and 15-17 city driving. Works for me.

The 3.73s should be good all around. I run 3.50 behind a R7004 w/lockup good take off and highway.

hi Patrick,,,i penciled it out on a calculater,,and at that weight and with that power it would put you through the 1/4@117mph,,if it sticks without to much tire spin thats 11.65S,,fast car!!
Now then what u need to know at what RPM the motor make,s its peak power and then the diameter of you rear tire,,because whats most benificial is to be running through the traps right at your redline and then u have a nice balanced package and your using all you Horsepower,
Here,s a calulater that may help, typically i deduct 15% from flywheel too rear wheel HP,,,,,,,,,jim

Thanks for all the replys. I have decided to go with the 3:73's. I figure that if the gear is a little to wild on the highway I can always add bigger tires, that then means I need more power to spin em, then that means bigger tire, that means more power, well you see my problem.

one thing to be aware of is that with the 700R4 it is possible to run to high of a gear and be lugging the motor. I have 3.42 gears with 2.55x70x15's on my BBC and below 45-50 I need to down shift to third. Went to a seminar by Inland Empire at Louisville last year and they said they are seeing alot of trans and driveline problems due to people running to high a gear with overdrive trannys

My Merc has an AOD with 3.08 gears and it lugs at speeds less than 60, and if I hit a little hill I have to downshift since the cruise control can't hold the speed in 4th. The Torino got switched to 3.55 gears to avoid that problem. Someday I'll regear the Merc.
Thanks for the heads up on lugging the motor but I dont think that will be happening, I only got 2 pedals on the floor and thats where at least 1 of them stays most of the time.LOL

Prixmo, I run a 700R4 in my chev with 3.55 gears. It runs at 70mph at 2400Rpm in overdrive with the converter locked up. If you're doing mostly highway the 3.73 may be a tad high but they'd sure be fun around town.
