Greetings, all. First post here at SRS. Looks like there's plenty of experience on this board - I'm a beginner, myself, and I was hoping to solicit a little feedback / advice from all of you.
I'm toying with the idea of a gear swap on my '67 Chevelle. I'm still in 'planning mode', and someone pointed out to me yesterday that maybe I should install a limited slip differential while I'm at it.
Interestingly enough, I found out this morning that a friend of mine has a complete 10-bolt sitting in his back yard. He doesn't know much about it, except that it's supposed to be a Positraction unit that came out of a Camaro (year unknown).
I can probably take it home for a song, so I think I'll go have a look next week. Experiences with this? Do I just measure end to end to find out whether or not it'll fit? What else should I be looking for? I wouldn't know what a limited slip differential looked like if it bit me in the a**, much less who built it (e.g., Eaton, Auburn, Dana, etc.). All I can think to look for is:
- Casting numbers (he didn't see any, so...)
- Determine gear ratio (be nice if they were 3.73s :o])
- Check that the gears look 'okay' (no rust, scoring, etc.)
- Verify Positraction by checking that both ends spin the same direction
The Camaro rear will not be a bolt in. The housing is completely different, leaf springs vs. coil springs. The differential unit itself should interchange as long as it is a first or second generation Camaro. I have never met anyone who can change the gears from wone case to another and not have them howl. You always have to use new gears with a 10 or 12 bolt. Hope this helps

Welcome aboard Bill. Glad to have you here. Lots of knowledgeable and friendly folks here. Take Patrick up on his offer of help, he's a great guy. There's also another guy in your area on this board that's a trans guru, if you happen to need any help in that arena. Again, welcome to SRS. :)

Your "top-less" cruzn buddy, Denise
Thanks for your replies, the warm welcome, and especially for the offer to help!
I don't know yet whether I'm going to try this myself or not. Most of the people I've spoken to say I oughtta job it out. Like I said, I'm a bit of a newbie here, and this is supposed to be a real bear of a job. Although I think I just found out where I can borrow the tools I'd need...
In any case, I haven't had the opportunity to see the unit yet. If I'm understanding correctly, the entire thing is useless to me (including the posi carrier - did I say that right?) unless I find that it's all encased in an 8.2" housing.
