HELP VIN trouble
by ALKLB

The '41 Chevy we though we were buying has a problem. Michigan made the title: MICH75758 as the vin number because the viv plate was gone when the car was restored. The guy selling me this car went to DMV in MI and they said fine. How do I get it registered in NY with no VIN plate or real number. NY will see the MICH in it and just laugh! Help!!!

I don't know about NY,but Ohio will require the vehicle go thru a "salvage title" type of inspection and then they will affix a vin plate, special rivets and all,to your Chevy. If it were me, I believe I would contact NY DMV and see what they say. DO THIS BEFORE YOU PURCHASE THE CAR !!!
The name of my business is, "Ohio Auto Inspector". Just my$.02

We had to pass on this car. It has no vin plate and the number on the MI title is a salvage type assigned by the MI dmv. back to looking. Why can't people just tell the truth!

ALKLB.......you are a wise man to pass on that car.
Without Vin#s or a tag, there is absolutly NO way to prove ownership. The title becomes toilet paper at that point.
I had a gentleman stop by the shop the other day, driving a LATE model Chevy 4x4,title paper in hand, and NO VIN PLATE !!
Been driving this thing for 6 months and just noticed a HOLE where the vin tag is supposed to be!! Want's to know what he can do about it. When I FINALLY got him to understand, that in reality, he can not prove ownership of the vehicle,he about had heart failure........Seems as though his own SON sold him this truck with bogus papers...
Wanna buy a Chevy....... CHEAP???????

Think I would have done it just like I did with my '27..er..'26 lol Bought my title at a swap meet and 'cause it was a '26, it was only $50...Here in Texas they'er a bit more lenient as I just took the title to the DMV and they transfered it over with no questions asked. The title had been signed by ...someone, and a sales receipt wasn't even asked for. I opted for the antique plates which is probably the reason it went thru so easily. My insurance guy sez I have to limit mileage to 5000 per year but I can fudge a lot on that. I'm pretty sure the DMV thought I had a bone stock '26 but I'm not telling..How's that go? Don't ask, don't tell?lol I used a set of metal letter/number punches to put the VIN on the frame. Think I'll make a call to Grant's number for the plates tho. I really would prefer normal plates but here in the "Great Republic of Texas", The stickers block half yur view. This way, there's not even an inspection required!
BTW, Grant, are the plates in different sizes?? I'm also planning on having the frame lengthened too for a little more elbow room and the ability to drop in a V8 if I want to...(and I does!) It would happen right where the number is stamped so the plate would be even better.
Anyhow, hope this gives you an idea but since you passed on it, is it close to Texas????? lol Since the owner now knows that the papers he has on it are no good, maybe the price will go down..
Here's a tip that a State Trooper gave me when I was playing with Bugs concerning changing the VIN number..From a cop no less!! Where the number is stamped into the tunnel, grind it clean then beat the area down with a good sized hammer then lead the area in till it's level. Then take the punch kit and put yur number over the old one and repaint with some semi gloss. Works great! His reason for telling me the trick was he was into Bugs too and at the rate they were disappearing, no one cared! I had to make a punch that looked like an asterisk as that was at each end of the number...Sorry this was so long winded...have a great Holidays Ya'll !!!!! FredP
PS, my title was from Michigan too

Just a story on title's......... When I bought my '38 from the 2nd owner in Missouri.I got the ORIGINAL title framed under glass(thank God)as well as the original Missouri registration(again, thank God). On the original title, they put the body serial# AND the engine serial#. When the 2nd owner purchased it,some how the BODY serial# was left off the title and the engine# was used as a serial#!! When we were doing the "out of state inspection" in Ohio,I had the girls put BOTH #'s on the inspection certificate.THEN when I went for MY title,I showed them what had happened. They had me sign a notorized letter stating that was the #'s were correct, included copies of the original title, and they put the original serial# back in place. If you were going to do a restoration, and keep the original engine,it would not be much of a problem.BUT,I was NOT going to be keeping that engine. Just another .02

I got a tittle from Grants friend in MD and paid 150 bucks. The ID plate that came with the paperwork was blank. It's about 3/4 X 1 1/2 inches. I took it too a jewery engraver at the mall and had them engrave the VIN into the plate. Looks good, but not an original one. The Hawk has an ID plate from ROD I.D. in Ca. Definatly doesn't look orig. but I've never had to explain.

Hey Al, have you ever thought of a different hobby? You've been having some probs getting a car, man. My 58 had a salvage title from OK when I bought it. I 'sold' it to a company in AL, sent them the title, they transfered the paperwork to AL, then 'sold' it back to me,complete with AL license plate. I took the paperwork to the state office and transferred it with no problems. Once a car has a salvage title, does that mean its' life is over, in most states??

BTW, I have a vin tag from a 58 Chevy, would that help? Good luck with your next car Al.

I've bought three cars from Alabama and they never issued titles on cars there until sometime in the '70s I think, so none of them had a title. I had no problems getting a title here in Michigan with just the bill of sale. The State Police came out and verified that the VIN on the car was the same as the title then ran the numbers for theft. I had a clean title in the mail a week later.

If someone wanted to be less than honest I suppose they could just say the car came from Alabama....don't know...

Grant, The name of the the company is Street Rod Works, 3155 Holland Cliffs Rd.,Huntingtown, MD 20639.
I bought a registration out of NY for my 32 3window, brought it to the DMV in NJ, and no problem getting a title. Although the blank VIN tag they sent with it looks cheesey, I will hunt down someone who can provide me with one that looks more original.

I know in Kansas they use a same kind of number KS-----
That's the state VIN number. Kansas will except that as the VIN number. as long is it matches the title.

Kansas says: If a state put on a state VIN number that means that the state did the title search and all. And put on there own id number.

Buy i don't know about NY laws.

Here in Ohio,a Salvage title is not a death certificate.Just means that at some point the car was considered a total loss by an insurance co. or owner. I have seen vehicles without a scratch on them be salvage titled. Rebuilt Salvage on the title means just that. Vehicle has been salvaged and repaired. To get that designation, the vehicle has to go thru a salvage title inspection. Here is the joke. They do NOT check any safety items! The vehicle can be GLUED together with bubble gum and pass. ALL they are checking,is that the parts you replaced are not from a stolen vehicle! In other words, your receipts have to have the vin from the "donor vehicle" and they have to match the vin#'s on the parts.Depending on the amount of,and which parts you replaced,SOMETIMES they will affix a State vin plate too the vehicle.I think that depends on the troopers mood that day. Did I mention these are done by the Ohio State Highway Patrol? There is also a home built or a "self constructed" title that differs a little bit. Normally on one of those, you have started out with a complete car(with title) and "rebodied" it or from a pile of parts and built it. Still have to have all the receipts, with vin#s but at least on those they make you have seat belts,lights,etc.etc. and they also affix a STATE vin plate on a "self constructed"
My wife drives a "rebuilt salvage" 2000 Dodge Durango that I put back together for her. Had a tree fall thru the roof and to repair it,I took the body off the frame(no frame damage) and replaced it with a stripped body from another salvaged Durango that had NO body damage(flood).I reused all the original interior(most)and wiring and had to buy 2 right side doors and glass for the doors.Passed the "salvage inspection" with flying colors, mainly because I had all my receipts and photo documentation of the rebuild to prove what I had done and which parts I had changed. The sticking point on this one was whether or not the "new" body had a dash(with the vin plate)in it when I bought it. It did, BUT I "lost" it during the rebuild, because having that dash would have meant a State issued vin plate and I did not want that,I wanted to keep my original plate.
There are numerous ways around the system, you just need to know how to dance the dance:))
