Does anyone know what would be best rear end width on a Model A ? The wheels are 8" with 3 1/2 " back space, 10" tires. I want to keep the wheels as close to the body as possibe.
Thanks,
Don

What body style are you using? A sedan has less room for big tires than a coupe/roadster.
Most Model A guys That I know use the early V8 Maverick. It is a 8" series rear. They are 56" flange to flange.
More info needed.......

A lot of guys are starting to use Chevy S-10 rears around here under the Model A's. Don't know if they are out of a pickup or Blazer, or if there is a difference. Might check the width on them. Gary

I would think that the appropriate rear end width would be at least a little less that one ax handle. Those seem to look the best.

I prefer the narrow ones too! However, most of the ones of the appropriate year seem to be a bit wide!Sure is nice to look at those 80's model rears, but for health reasons better stick with the 50's model I have at home!Everyone have a Merry Christmas!!

Camaro or Vette might be your answer here...seen A Coupes and Sedans with 'em and they seem to be the one, even if ya narrow it for pro street.

There are 2 very different S10 rears (made in the same years). A 2 wheel drive rear end is 2-3 inches more narrow than the the same year 4 Wheel drive rear end of the same year.
To run the tire and wheel combination that he wants UNDER the Model A will most likely require a narrowed rear end and some surgery on the inner wheelwells.
I would measure the distance between the outside edges of the rear fenders, subtract 3 inches (1 and 1/2 inches clearance per fender).Put the rims and tires (outside width) at that measurement and then measure the distance between the mounting points on the wheels. Then I would know the width rear end needed. Then I would narrow a 9" Ford rear end to work.
The 9 inch is the easiest to narrow and will handle whatever horsepower you can put to it in a street car.

I don't have body or frame yet... just preliminary planning.
The rear end will be a 9" . already have the pumpkin. This is for a Roadster body.(not sure of body width at axle). I've heard 55-57" is typical rear end width(I believe flange to flange measurement is refered to).
Thanks for the responses.

Your best best is a 81 Granada. Width is 57 1/2 inches axle flange to axle flange. This way you can use a deeper offset to make up some difference to keep from going the narrowing of axles route. I found out to late for my Deuce roadster as I narrowed the housing to 56 1/2 inches and now I am searching for a stock axle for the long side.

I put a 86' Monte Carlo under my 31'Tudor. 373 gears. If you need the width backplate to backplate, I will measure for you. Rick

Rick,
I would be interested in knowing the width of your 31 Tudor at the center of the wheel well. Are they the same width as the roadster and coupe?
Basically I already have the wheels ( 5 on 5 pattern,8'' wide with 3 1/2" back space ) In view of this I'm trying to use these wheels on a 9" Ford rear end and be able to have the wheels close to the body( no fenders will be installed).
So I need to determine an appropriate housing width to order.
Thanks,
Don

Daryle, Sue wants to know just what car you're referring to? We love you're sense of humor, no wonder you made sure that shop of yours was heated. Merry Christmas to you and to all a good night. Tom & Sue.

Well at least there were 3 of us that got that. Methinks that the humor is at least as old as the poster. That being 1940's vintage, prolly why no other comments. Or else they are just ignoring us and sticking to the original subject.
Actually I was just seeing if anyone was really paying attention.
