Ponder this....
by ALKLB
Posted: 12/24/2002 19:14 EST

In a world where some of us tend to either mock others or just plain single out those that are different:

A thought that none of us can argue with:

Remember we are all Earthlings regardless of where on earth we are from...

Although I am sure there will be one of us to say we are not... Happy holidays to all!

What's the matter Tom, don't you feel like hanging out in an Oxygen bar where you can stick a tube up your nose to purify your adrenalin glands with an oxygen "infusion" to go with your glass of soy milk? There's a tongue in cheek article in the AARP magazine about Boulder and the residents' quest for aligning their chakra with the stars to enable a free flow of energy forces.

Excuse me while I go balance my yin and yang with some herbal tea before the jolly fat man shows up.

Deuce I took your advise. I have a couple of mason jars of some moonshine stashed that was made in South Carolina. It's a lot better than herbal tea.....and my yin an yang are right where they should be :-)

After reading this thread, why do I get the image of Junior Johnson drifting a 40 Ford tanker through a dusty corner some where in S. Carolina, to the strains of Thunder Road sung by Robert Mitchem, of course.
I didn't know if there is much of a difference between "everclear" and "shine" but I suspect, little if any. Has anyone ever tried a imported alcohol product from the former Yugoslavia called "Slivovitz" (shlee-vo-vits)? There's both a Serbian and the Croatian product that are almost exact in taste but carry different ethnic baggage. The difference I believe is that lightening is a corn based product and the import is plum based. They both taste similar, like Zippo lighter fluid if I remember correctly and take some getting used too. Two swigs will do in either case and then your on your own. I've never tried "everclear" but as stated, I'm guessing it's the same taste as shine, just another name. All were originally made by country folks for personal consumption and based on my limited experience, do kick. Their main difference being you can buy "Slivovitz" at the local ABC, usually.
Well, just my 2 cents. Happy New year and miles of trouble free motoring to all...Frank

Just what I've heard, don't you know.

I've had Slivovitz and it's a little smoother than Zippo lighter fluid but not much. The Everclear I had was from Illinois where they can sell 190 proof (Michigan can only sell the 150 proof stuff). It was worse than drinking lighter fluid. My throat closed right up and I thought I was gonna die for a minute.

The shine I've got, on the other hand, was supposedly made from sugar cane and came from S Carolina. It's clear as a bell and is really smooth for the strength. I don't know the proof but if you dip your finger in it and put your finger in a flame it goes WHOOFF! and burns blue....something to do to entertain yourself after a few sips :-) By the way, it's probably not a good idea to post messages on the internet after drinking any of the above....and I won't tell you how I know :-)

George; are you saying that everclear is a off the shelf product that I can just go in and buy? And sugar cane shine, hummmm. Wouldn't that be rum?
Just thinking out loud here.
Also,
"it's probably not a good idea to post messages on the internet after drinking any of the above"

Learned about Everclear years ago when I lived in Colorado. Friends in Aspen had us over for a Saturday dinner and afterward they broke out the "Kahlua" (in gallon jugs) and ice and poured everyone a big tummbler full of the stuff. (It was really several tumblers for each of us before the event was over.) They made it -- several gallons at a time -- from Everclear, Yuban instant coffee, Hershey's chocolate syrup, and distilled water. I don't recall the ratio of the components but they hit the target dead center because it was as good as Kahlua gets -- and a helluva lot cheaper.

BTW, I was amused by Colorado's "blue law" relative to alcoholic beverages. From Monday through Saturday you can buy pretty much anything you can imagine, including 180-proof Everclear, but on Sunday nothing stronger than 3.2 beer is sold.

My mother makes the best Kahlua and Baileys on her kitchen stove. Your right Mike, it's better then the store bought stuff. If anyone wants the exact recipe, I think my mom would share.

Alittle kahlua, alittle volka, over ice, throw in a designated driver, and I'm ready to party!! Yum, yum.

I have a bottle of Everclear in my bar,190 from Texas......pour a shot glass of it and light it to entertain the troops,'cause you sure can't drink it! I have had plain(if there is such a thing)'shine and it is much smoother than Everclear. Peach 'shine sounds like it would be good. Best home made alcohol I have ever tasted, was some "applejack",made from fresh cider and raisins, let work in an old oak barrel:)) Ohh Yaaaaa.......

Raisins, yeah that's the ticket. I heard that you take a jug of home made red wine, which is good in it's own right and add a snack size box of raisins. Let this extra sugar or whatever do it's work for a couple of days and you've increased the kick twice fold. That's what I've heard only and have yet to try it....

Spent a bunch of years in the Army and when oversees, some of us made our own drink and raisins were always the main ingrediant. Never learned how to build a still that wouln't make ya go blind and still be able to hid it too!!! Applejack was my fathers favorite drink of choice as upper NY State is full of apple orchards. He would make up a lot of it in the fall and when winter arrived,(Plattsburgh, NY)
and it got down near zero, he'd put it out over night and the next day he would pour out what didn't freeze and my uncles would come over and put their money down!!! Never got to try it cause I was a "kid" at the time but it had a kick apparently..lol

Hey Frank, what you're talking about is how they make raisin jack in prison. Pruno is another favorite....same thing made with prunes. Be careful if you ever try some....it can have terrible after effects....and I don't mean getting drunk with Bubba in his cell. Like you said, that's only what I've heard.

If you say so George cause I'm not sure about the making, only the sampling. Though I do remember that as a young boy a distant cousin taking a jug of apple cider that had fermented into apple jack, poured the contents into his mothers pressure cooker and turned up the flame. Prior to it coming to a boil he affixed a rubber hose to the top steam outlet and ran it through a ice bath to condense the vapor. I don't remember how he tapped off the liquid but I think one could refer to his contraption as a small still. Are you listening Fred....

I got every word even without word wrap! lol Hmmm, we've had a pressure cooker (2 qt) for a lot of years but seldom ever used it. I know a place locally that you can get glass tubing that has been made into a coil and would make for an excellent condenser with some ice for cooling...think I'll try it with some cheap wine and see if it makes anything that resembles Brandy or ....whatever....I'm not too particular..lol
