Streetrod Milage

I know insurance was discussed last month, but yesterday I received a form letter from State Farm asking me for the actual milage on the '39, my estimated mileage for 2003 and if I drove it to work. I've had them as my insurer for the last 28 years for the house, travel trailer and all our cars [only the last 8 on the '39]and mileage has never been mentioned. I have never had a problem with them, they have always paid the claims we've had, and we've had a few [only one accident our fault--knock wood]house burglerized to the tune of about 7K, hit by an uninsured motorist etc. I would really like to continue with them but I may have to find someone else for the streetrod if they are going to get picky with milage. Anyone else had mileage problems with State Farm?

I have State Farm insurance for my house, daily drivers, boat, and motorcycle but they won't insure my rods. I had the '31 pickup insured with them years ago and my agent called and wanted to update my file so he wanted me to stop by with it so they could take a picture. The minute the agent saw it he said "Oh my God....we're insuring THAT!?" He pointed out in their classic auto insurance policy where it said the vehicle couldn't be altered in any way from it's original configuration to enhance performance and a few other things that I can't remember now. If I remember right they had a 2000 mile annual mileage limit too.

The agent died recently and the new agent wanted to go over my coverages on everything so I brought up the street rod issue again just to see what she would say. I know her dad real well so she knows what my rods are. She told me that she can't legally write a policy for my rods. She also said that some agents will overlook some of the mods but there is always the possibility that claims might not be paid.

I know of people that have their rods insured with State Farm and have had claims paid with no problems at all. I don't know what the difference is. All I know is that the list of exceptions that I read showed that my rod wasn't insurable by them.

You should read your policy real good and make sure you and your agent are both comfortable that you honestly qualify....BEFORE you need to file a claim.

I had nothing but problems with State Farm about 15 years ago and I switched, never looked back . There are to many other companies and agents willing to get your business. I found a local independant agent that has been great. Got my house,ALL my cars, including the '38,both Jetski's,Harley and my business policy, all thru one company. Reason I wanted to do that? My shop is also at my residence and the liability that goes with that can be a real problem. So far they have been great. Go shopping, you might be surprised! Just my $.02

Well, I am on the other side of the fence on this I guess. I have had my two daughters, wife, myself and all the rods, muscle cars and even my Dad's 55 is on my master policy with an umbella to boot.

State farm wants the milage to ascertain how much you are driving this car. The antique rate is limited milage I believe, but they have several classes which I am not familiar with at this time....or can't remember.

I have all my cars appraised for actual value payout on loss and all the accoutrememts.

I have had one claim on one of my daughter's car getting hit and run....in front of the police station LOL and he was found about 6 months later...and the insurance company refunded my deductable when he finally paid up! I thought he would never show after a couple of weeks hunting for him?

I also have had another claim when a car of mine got hit big time at the airport from a construction piece and did several thousand of dollars damage while I was up up and away. They paid up immediately when the city would NOT give up the survailence recording and could have placed blame exactly. I did sue them in small claims for deductable and they paid up reluctantly.

So, State Farm has been very good to me....all the way down the line. I don't think they are the cheapest (probably GEICO) but they consistently score high. I have dealt with GEICO and Cincinnati as well. All of these companies have been great to work with.

When I first insured the '39 I had to bring it and a professional appraisal to the agents office and pictures were taken of the car, exterior, interior and under the hood. The policy was written up for a modified classic. This is the first questionnaire that I have received in all these years so I guess I'll wait and see what develops. Even with an annual trip to Florida every year and numerous local runs and the Louisville Nats I keep the mileage around 5000. If they start restricting mileage to around 2000 I'll have to start shopping.

Chopper, don't worry about the mileage form. I've been insured with State Farm for over 20 yrs. and any vehicle (rod or whatever) if it's on a low mileage coverage they'll check every so often on mileage. My wife used to have a 94 Mustang convert as a summer driver and she recieved one for that. I noticed your worried about the mileage dropping. I have mine on 7500 or less not antique which I think is around 2000. Hit a deer with my cpe on the way to Louisville this yr. and damage was just under $15,000 adjuster looked at the car on Monday and I recieved the check (made out to me only) on Fri. no hassel or problem.

Jack, thanks for the reassurance. This is the first form that I've receive. I also have a 74 Charger [bought new]that is a summer driver, that just turned 50k, and I've never gotten the form for it. In fact the Charger is the reason I went with State Farm. I had Motorists and they said it was a sports car and my 6 mo. premiums were $600 in 1974- SF knocked them down to $250. For kicks I am going to get Grundy after the holidays.

I get the same form every year from Metropolitan. It's for my multi-car discount and I get another discount if my mileage is below a certain threshold. If I don't fill it out, I don't get the discounts.

I use to get the same form from Liberty Mutual. I never filled it out, and they never asked for it.

I have 3 diff insurance companys plus my umbrella. I also received the milage form for the wifes everday car and on one my trucks.( i went to my agent and he actually helped me figure the milage so it was correct cause we were close on the wifes car ) I think they just do it every now and than when you own more cars than people to drive them. 2 drivers with 11 cars/trucks reg and insured they may start to wonder whats going on. Dont worry to much as insurance is cheap for rods and very easy to get as long as there are no teenage drivers around.
