I went out and started shopping for bigger speakers, a new head unit and cd player for the ride. I have two questions. First- are these ultra thick stereo cables worth it or am I ok with some regular old 12ga speaker wire? Second- there is some stuff called Dynamat that is on display at the stereo sellers..is this stuff worth it or would I be trashing more money with that purchase??

I used to DJ, and used monster cable when I was DJing....it is well worth the time, and money invested to get that cable.....it is also worth putting gold tips on the wires...this gives a nice clean connection....my last truck I had about 4600.00 into the stereo....

all wire isnt created equal, go for strand count more than guage size, all 4 ga wire isnt the same....good stereo shops (few and far between!) will most likely recommend a twisted style noise rejecting rca, namely monster, kimber, or phoenix gold...def. worth the extra $100 to buy better cables/wires

I am in the audio business I own the largest live sound importing business in the country and if you can "hear " the difference in cable you will be the only person on the planet who can
There is a definate differance between crap and standard cable but everything else is smoke and mirrors blended with snake oil
As for Monster etc if you believe the marketing you deserve the hole in your wallet
Nearly everything ever spoken about Hifi and cables etc is absolute rubbish and that goes for all the rubbish they spout about the power cable to the domestic amp as well
As for the gold plating it might make a differance but not one you could ever measure

ps a good rule when you stop hearing the differance stop spending
By the way awhile back one of the american mags sound and video contractor set out to dipel the myths about home hifi and cables etc.
They got 5 of the top so called experts and got them to bring their own equipment for a shoot out
They set everything up behind a curtain so it was a blind test
They then asked each expert to take notes about the differences they could hear in the different cables as they changed things around
Well not only did each experts notes not match but after carefully reading them all the testers revealed they made no changes at all and every difference the "experts " could hear between one cable and another was all in their imagination

I guess its ok for everyone to go out and get some #14 wire now for their starters and things that draw a bunch of current...I noted in my post that the peak audio was fairly high current and thats been proven...Some folks with really good high frequency hearing will note the difference as applying a 'scope to the tweeter in a system with and without decent wiring will at least see that their high frequencies will flatten out with the cheap stuff..Woofers will also show a fall off in output..ohms law and a couple others will show you the difference....I have high enuff frequency hearing that misadjusted TV sets would emit a squeel and it bothered the hell out of me but most others couldnt hear it..
Modern day Amps are using power FET's instead of transistors and are more efficient..Most will operate into 8, 4, or even a 2 ohm load!!! How about just 500 watts to one channel into a 2 ohm load!!! That's a bunch of power and I will not believe for one moment that someone would actually believe that #14 wire is sufficient...even automotive stranded wire (i believe 19 strand) is not sufficient.. If one is going to put some bucks into a high power system, why scrimp on the connecting cable because someone says that they think the heavier stuff is a waste..
Use #14 in a system that makes about 500 to 1000 watts and after a bit of use, feel the temp of the wire!!

Go on guys, eat your hearts out, am gonna see one of the greatest performers in rock and roll history in August at the Jones Beach Theatre. Now mind you, I am NOT a music or concert lover, the guy just has style. Every performance is like a mini production. Paradise by the Dashboard lights, indeed!

That mumbling incoherently was a "after effect" I guess...lol. The other nights Osbourne episode took the cake...one minute he couldn't get out of a chair to save his life, after the commercial break they showed him running 5 miles on his 54th birthday. Guess the Geritol kicked in in the two and a half minute break! j/k!!!
Boy am I gettin it now...I'll go hide

Yes to the Dynamat, it DOES make a difference.
As for the monster cables, think of it this way...would you run a high hp blower motor and use tiny 1/4" fuel line? No...you'd run the biggest baddest line you could get so the engine won't starve. Same goes for "high hp" stereo equipment. As the others have said, bigger IS better.

Think of the speaker like this.....a starter draws a lot of current because of the "power" it must make..Same goes for speakers..If you have a high power system, say just 1000 watts, divide that by your supply voltage (about 12.8 VDC for example) and you get 78 amps !! Now this is not a steady state current draw but rather a peak current and that will vary depending on what kind of music yur playing. If you put a sine wave signal of about 1000 Hz (Cycles) into the unit and cranked it up, you can see where it would put the big "meltdown" on small guage wire !!!
The high strand count "Monster" wire is the way to go or if yur really a hog for watts (hogs are covered with watts......) get some 00 welding cable...the difficultly lies in getting the right connector and since the size of the connections are usually smaller than the wire, The plated connectors are best and install them as directed..Personally, I solder everything I do with wire in a car and apply solder shrink wrap over the connection.. It really would be best to take Dave up on his offer as that stuff ain't cheap!!! Big sound=big wire..When the amps first started coming on the scene and I was doing the installation then, I would have on hand, several of the cheap jumper cable sets and usually used them for the speakers...A few folks laughed at that and I said keep using yur cheap 14 or more guage wire.. It didn't take long for them to start getting returns and finally the owner broke loose for a big roll of #8 that really helped..
Good luck! My music now is my headers and, yes, I gun the motor too when passing thru an underpass or tunnel !!
