'87 SBC, can I use an early intake manifold??

Have an '87 low milage SBC that was EFI TPI equipped prior to my buying it. The TPI is gone & I' m looking to replace with a carb & intake, but I find that Edelbrock Performer (carb.) intake manifolds list a different model number for the '87 year model (vs. the older year model intakes). I suspect that the difference is merely that the two center intake bolt holes are angled. I have read that on the TPI manifolds that installing them to early block it only requires filing out the bolt holes a bit in order to allow the bolts to align up with the cyl. head. So, my thinking is that it should be easy to put an older carb intake manifold onto the later model style heads..??

I am not sure what the difference in the bolt pattern is on teh 87 and newer heads are, but edelbrock makes an intake for those heads, it is a little more expensive, but shoudl do the trick no questions asked. You can also contack jegs with yoru question and they should be able to help 1-800-345-4545.

as you suspected....the difference is the angle on the two center bolts on each side.

I have seen people grind them with sucess and some with failure. I would just go ahead and buy the correct intake. That's what I did for my 90 Silverado 350 engine. Worked great. Put the 350 in a project and did not want TBI or the electrical issues associated with the TBI.

600 cfm Edelbrock and a new Edelbrock intake worked well.

I just last week modified a weind dual plane intake for an early model carb engine to fit my 91 Chev. pickup engine. I figured the angles on the two center bolts on each side and then welded them up and made a boss for redrilling at the proper angle. I am fortunate enough to have the mig and a milling machine at work, but it can be done. Good luck.
