Have a 350 trans in a 34 chevy. the shifter shaft is leaking. can the seal be replaced from the outside of the trans? or do you have to to it from the inside?

Rick......
This is a simple job......if you have the right tool. KD makes a kit tool for this.
1) remove the shifter arm
2) the tool goes over the shaft and you turn it into the seal until it bites the seal
3) there is a bolt that you turn that pulls the seal(and tool) out.
4) install new seal....the tool kit has a correct size driver cap.
The tool is inexpensive and most GOOD parts houses will have it if they carry KD tools.
I would lend you mine but the freight BOTH ways would be more than the cost of the tool.

Here is a photo of the KD tool seal remover and the seal installation tool.
Some transmissions are cast heavy enough to put 2 seals. I have double sealed a few over the years.
PowerGlides, Turbo 350, Turbo 400 and others ALL use the same seal so the tool is good for most GM automatic transmission equipped cars.

Deuce is right about that neat little K-D tool. One thing I might add is this- before you tap the new seal in be sure and take a small file to the sharp edges on the shaft where the flats were cut to locate the shift arm. If you dont the edges will shave the new seal and it will leak!!! Also, Buy two or three of the new seals, cause you might goof one up installing it. I know I have. They are real cheap ($) anyway. The trans. shops stock them by the bag full. good luck, Dale
