Here is what I want ro aƧcomplish:
1. Attach a 5-speed OD stick tranny to a 305 SBC motor and than install it into a '40 Ford Pickup.
2. I bought a 305 motor together with its 5 speed GM tranny. I had been told that the S-10 rear housing and shifter could be attached easily to the rear of that tranny and thereby moving the shifter to the center of the transmission, (rather than on the end of the tailshaft). That makes for a much better shifting position in a pickup.
A transmission man who claimed to have done the rear tailshaft switch said it was not such an easy job...recommended getting a newer S-10 tranny and using that, installing the '84 gears into the S-10 case! Fine, but the '88 up has an electronic sender for the speedometer...creating another problem, as I really want to retain the original Ford mechanical speedo, if possible.
Should the late model S-10 be an optrion, which would work best attached to the 305? The 4 cyl, the V-6??
Thanks for any advice, Fred

Fred, I had planed putting a T5 in my '65 GTO w/389. Here is what I have found out. I'm not a transmission expert by any means, but I believe this information to be correct:
1- 82-92 V8 Camaro T5 has a 26 spline input shaft (clutch dia. availiability no problem).
2- 88-92 V8 & V6 Camaro is a World Class unit making it a little better unit and I emphasize "little".
3- 88-92 V6 Camaro T5 has a 14 spline input shaft (clutch dia. is a problem). The largest dia. clutch disc I could find, and I work at an Auto Parts store and believe me I searched, is a 9 11/16" disc. This will not work with the 10-1/2" pressure plate I want to use.
4- From what I can find out any of these T5's are very weak. It would probably be alright if you "baby" it all the time, but I like to "feel" of mine from time to time. I have heard you can switch the tail housings, but I've never done it, so I don't know how much trouble it would be.
So, yesterday after a lot of research I bit the bullet and ordered a new Tremec TKO from Swarr Auto. www.swarrauto.com I think).
I have a T5 from a '92 Camaro (Shifter on the rear) if you're interested, cheap.
I hope I haven't confused you and that this will be of some help to you. If I can help you with any other questions post it or e-mail me.

1940 and 1941 Fords have a enclosed driveshaft. The installation of almost any transmission made after the Korean War will require another rear end or the hard to find 46-47 Ford F1 rear end open drive pieces.
