I bought a set of Weiand finned aluminium valve covers at the swap meet and they look like they have had gas and oil leaking on them for decades the sides are shining up real nice the problem is the part in between the fins won't come clean any tricks?

Might try some of the "Never Dull" stuff they sell at autozone and other places or maybe some of the wheel cleaner spray, Do not know if it will work for really bad stains but I have used both at one time or another and have worked for me. Hope maybe this will help

1200 wet and dry..use a piece of wood as wide as the fin grooves to act as a sanding block. Once its get the dull stains off use a good billet polish and a cotton cloth again as the sanding step with the wood..

You might have to use some deoxider. Then polish.

Use 1200 sandpaper to expose the fresh aluminum underneath and then use Wenol with a paper towel. A paper towel works much better than cloth--you will use a lot of them. Then finish up with a wool buffing pad. You will get them shiny again, but it will take some time. Just be patient. I polished a tunnel ram manifold once when I had time and no money.

Hey Bill, I agree with a couple of the guys that use sandpaper. But, I start with 400 and then to 1000 or 1200, then to a product called Autosol. The bike boys use it for anything aluminum. If you've got an air die grinder chucj a cotton wheel in it and go for it. I used this method on a set of 86 IROC wheels to polish the entire surface of the wheel(spokes, flats between the spokes, etc) worked very well. Also used it on the breather I made for the tri-power.
lots of work, but hey, it's winter anyway !!

Try Aluminum Wash [spray] by Busch products. It is a cleaner for oxidised aluminum. it smells and acts like a mild acid or aluminum naval jelly. it will clean up stained cast rough aluminum, the part s you wouldn't normally polish.

I do all my own metal polishing was going to post a pick of the bellhousing I just finished for my 32 till my GF pointed out my relection in it wasn't something I would want on the internet LOL

I use polishing mops mounted on a plain old bench grinder with the paste available from polishing outlets
Most people don't understand that polishing is a multistep process miss one step and it looks less than what it could

Older alloy has a corrosion layer that you need to hit pretty hard to get rid off first I actully use a thin treated mop and 80 grit paste then change to an unstiched mop and hyfin stainless paste then green lime
I follow this with a perfectly clean newish unstitched mop with nothing on it to really get it shiny
in the small areas i hand sand with 240 then 320 then 400 and finally 1000 wet and then hit with the bufferand green lime even useing the dremel in really tight areas
also on wierd shapes I use a large nut and bolt and stick the polishing mop in a large drill there is so many how to's on the subject most of the best ones concern motorbikes
