trans cooler or radiator?

I've heard two storys.
1. If you cool your trans using the radiator the fluid will not get as cool because the radiator is always at or around 190 degrees. This will cause the trans to were out faster because of eccessive heat.
2. Use a trans cooler only in front of the radiator and the fluid will run cooler.
Which is correct?

#2. You can also mount the cooler any place where there is cool air flow (Between the frame rails under the car)or they also make a cooler with a fan attached so you can mount that one just about anywhere. Just keep it away from heat sources, mufflers, exaust pipes and the motor itself. I put mine back between the gas tank and the rear roll pan. It gets plenty of cool air and is not in harms way.

I'd be wary of using a cooler only. A trans needs a certain amount of heat to operate corrctly and it might not get it in the winter. I understand that there are thermostats available to close the cooler until the trans warms up. A properly installed cooler is installed in line ahead of the radiator cooler. This will cool superheated oil some and still pick up heat from the radiator before going back to the trans in cool weather.

Water might enter the top of the radiator at 190 degrees, but has cooled significantly by the time it reaches the bottom if it's operating correctly. OEMs don't use radiators to cool the trans for no reason. The above are my opinons only.

I was told years ago,by a very reputable trans expert,to put the LARGEST trans cooler that you can fit on the car. The cooler the fluid, the longer the trans life. That torque converter can and will generate a lot of heat, specially if it is a performance converter and you are a "spirited" driver. Not all that heat will be lost in the cooler. If you plan on driving it in the winter,it might be a good idea to run the fluid thru the cooler, then thru the radiator cooler to help it warm up quicker. Just my $.02,your mileage may vary.......

I just got dome installing a B&M TransCooler/Fan unit...work great!

By removeing the cooling for you trans from the radiator will make a world of difference in engine temp.
