Hey Gang,
How many quarts does a 700R4/ 4L60 hold? Also, what TV cable and manifold bellcrank should I use?

Bowtie Overdrives have a very slick and easy kit and cable package to mate the three most popular 4 bbl. carburetors with a 700R4. There was an article in Chevy HiPerformance magazine about nine months ago or so, and after reading the article I ordered it. No disappointments. Check them out at www.700r4.com .

from dry, including a flushed and blown out cooler, a 700r4/ 4l60e will hold 11 1/4 qts. add 1/4 qt for external trans cooler.
I'm still trying to figure out how to set up the TV cable. Some say the TV cable should be set to be fully extended at WOT, while others say it should be set to be barely slack at idle. Still others say the only way to set the TV cable is with a trans pressure gauge.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

Dooce, try this site for some common sense on 700R4's. I wished I would have found it BEFORE I did mine.
Rochie
its as u thought fully extended at w.o.t.. i know,, i work on transmissions, and grew up in a shop... (dads owns 1. lol)not all r like this however.. killer page for help or info though...
Thanks for your help on this guys, but I need still more. I have a rebuilt 700r, the TPI Performance bracket mounted correctly on an Edelbrock carb, and TV cable set fully extended (but not overextended) at WOT.
BUT I read that under mild acceleration just when the trans shifts to 2nd, if I nail it the trans should then downshift to 1st. This doesn't happen.
Also, at full power I get a nice launch, the shift to 2nd occurs at ~5700 rpm (too high - redline on my sbc is 5200), but worse the shift to 3rd follows almost immediately after.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks again,
Dooce (Bill)

Dooce, is that 5200 rpm redline realistic?
My 1969, 2-bolt main 350 regularly gets shifted at 6500-6800 rpm. It has unintentionally seen 7000+ a few times. This is not a special race motor, just a stock bottom end.
Did the change to powdered-metal connecting rods make that much of a change, or are there other factors limiting rpm redline?
BTW, the 4L60E trans in my completely stock 1998 Chevy pick-up with 350 Vortec, shifts at 5500 rpm under WOT acceleration.

Hmmm ... don't know much about the redline except what the HO350 docs say. Redline is actually 5500, but the hp/torque curves drop off the cliff after 5200. But it's great if I'm not going to blow anything by reving higher!

i had the same problem with mine when i 1st put it in... overall, i ended up installing new govenor gear and doubling up valve body gaskets, figured i had a bleed somewhere. either 1 couldve caused the problem... i dont which it was,,, was tired of dealing with it... so i did both at once... but the result was problem solved

Crosley could help you out. He's a member here but post a lot more at RRT. He has a website--do a member search here for Crosley and then email him. Automatic transmissions are his business.

What you are seeing is stack shifting. The usual cause is a weak spring on the 2-3 shift valve. This is common in a 1986 or earlier 700 tranny.
A TransGo shift kit will fix the problem, not with out some working knowledge of why it is happening though.
It could be a sticky 1-2 shift valve causing the 5700 rpm upshift, I doubt though.
A governor change may help.
B&M also has a kit to change the governor weights and springs for different shift points. I would try that first rather pulling the valve body to re-calibrate the unit.
