Help w/ distributor replacement & timing!

I pulled the HEI from my 327 SBC engine to install a new coil. Following the book's instructions, attention was paid to the position of the rotor befoe pulling ...in order to replace it in the same alignment position. However after trying to rotate it down to its former position, it just would not fall into the same spot even after 4-5 tries. It looks to be one notch off (towards the clockwise side of distributor rotation).

Surely some gearheads here will have the proper solution to get the HEI back one notch counter clockwise before I tear out any more hair & waste some foul language on this fool thing!!. Thanks, Fred

you will prolly need to reach down in the engine with a long screwdriver and re-position the oil pump drive shaft just a bit in the counter-clockwise direction.......

The rotor will appear to be off about one notch until the distributor is seated fully. But I guess you know that (?)

I don't think I'm wrong on this one, but isn't the coil in the distributor cap on an HEI? I'd go with the answer about rotating the shaft a bit.

Right! Rotate the oil pump and it will fall into place. when you start a new engine it's beneficial to use that long screw driver and an electirc drill to get the oil pressure up before firing the first time.
