Hey guys......as some of you know I am working on a new venture called "IndyQuest". The venture is the production of an OPEN car show and Cruise. The event will be a 3 or 4 day event and feature not only multiple venues such as MuscleCarmania, Street Rod Alley, Tunerville, Classic Corner, Trucksville, Outrageus Outing, Ibuiltit Isle and other niche venues....12 in all. The participants of these venues will be professionally judged and cash will be awarded to the winners of each venue. We have not decided on how deep to award yet....and... The winners and a few other pics will go to the "The Shootout at HotRod Corral" and best of show will get a substantial check...real money...and lot's of it! Also, I want a classic 1957, 998 point hotrod Belair or a totally restored 1939 resto Oldsmobile to be given as much weight and credibility as a $400K custom built street rod etc. All cars will have to be driven into the event...no trailers inside and/or no towing to the event areas. It has to run and be roadworthy. I think you get the picture of where I am going.
Here is my dilima. I am putting the "tuners and lowriders" out afar so the noisy and goings on will not disturb the peace and quiet of the others. Even tho I like some of the things they do, I can't take the constant loud stereos etc. They are located about 1/4miles from the vendors and others and you will see how when I give you more details later. My question to you is would you attend such an event (since it's an open show) and do the presence of other types/categories of cars and trucks inhibit your attendance at all?
This event is NOT in concrete yet (but close) and we are working to make it happen in 04! I cannot say much more about the event other than it will not only be a show...but be a cruise to other places that will offer entertainment and fun...lots of fun....more new and unusual ideas than just sitting in the parking lots ! My motto is "move, entertain and chuck". I am sorry that I cannot answer any questions about the event yet due to the nature of the project. I will be glad to give it all after December 1. You WILL like what you hear.
I really value ALL your opinions on this so let it fly!

Just my take with other shows tossing low riders(import stuff) and tuner cars. Sorry bud i like looking at what the local kids bring to my shop 1 at a time (they know i have been known to dump salt water in to amps of a few locals so they are real low key with dumb bass crap) If that stuff shows up you end up with problems. Everthing else is a go. Its too bad but it just draws trouble and some dont even own cars. The show in Pa is now history because they caused so much trouble. I for one would not go when imports are involed....just something i really dont like looking at or care to be involed in. Yep i still have a old 911 and a brandnew V-6 passat. Have no wants to hang around that bunch. Now if it were SCCA stuff i have no problem with it.
I like the no trailer rule....i allways said show us your insurance card before you let em on site. Get rid of the ship boxes that are towed there to ride around looking for a mag cover. It amazes me how much time people waste on some junk that will never see the road. Hey Jack Dec is a little late you better get rollin LOL Most guys allready know were there going next year by then. Good luck and dump the imports.

Bruce, If it's too loud you're too old! hehe
Emil, I second your amen!
I avoid judged shows. Too much pissing and moaning for me.
Everything else sounds good.
Steve, can you tell us where this event is going to take place?

We cleaned out the shed a few months back and I tossed a couple boxes full of old throphies out, what a load of cr** that was.
--
I had a room full of throphies when I was racing.
I then became the promoter at a track for one season.
I retagged all my thropies and gave them out.
The only ones I saved were my big track champion throphies, and they all went up in a house fire.

I gave all but six of my biggest trophies to the Special Olympics, and I am going to get rid of those last six pretty soon as they are gathering dust and taking up space in my garage. If people must give out prizes, how about a check for the price of the trophy. I wouldn't mind getting five or ten bucks for a prize. Or maybe something I can use such as tools, a gift certificate to a restaurant, etc. Trophies make the show organizers feel like they are giving a prize, and while the egocentric trophy hounds dig it, I think it is a waste.

Guys....keep the ideas and input coming one and all. I like the information.
On the judging thing I think you have to please both groups.....the guys who like it and the ones who don't...We are going to eventually dub this the "The National Hotrod and Truck Championships" (this is already trademarked) and want to have only an element of the participants to judge.....not the whole crowd. Some of you will want to move and be entertained as well. If you just want to come to show and shine..then you can do it or go to the number of cruise venues within the region. There will be alot of tours as well of professional racing shops, street rod shops and so forth. And something for the ladies to do at several of the venues.....and it won't be junk for sale...QUALITY VENUES AND INTERESTING SITES TO SEE. And..if you enter in the proper venue yes...primer WILL count. I like that look personally...we will actually have a venue for that look! The judges are going to be professional in the sense that they do this for alot of shows and will NOT be celebrity builders etc as judges....if ya catch my drift. We will also have picks to add to the fray. We have a team of many to do this....so it's not just one or two passing the plate so to speak. Remember, the top awards will be CASH! And remember...I want to give every group of competitors an equal and fair shake at all the money. For example, if we come across a car that is fabulous and has 10K on the speedo...that adds points whereas we know it's been driven. All cars will have to have fluids in them as well. I actually have a friend who has a show Camaro that does not put any water in so he doesn't have to worry about leaks? So, I want every car that competes a completely driveable beauty.
One of the parking spaces/lots is dedicated to group parking...but you cannot compete in a venue. You can book these spaces ahead of time and reserve a spot...how about that. YOu will have to have a minimum tho....and a deposit to boot.
I can't really tell you the venue yet..the deal is not done but looking good for sure...I am excited as heck. The venue people are very excited as well. You WILL be impressed...trust me. We are also throwing several dates around....but will anounce in December along with the major sponsors.
You guys will be elated over the other things we are going to do here. It's just new and bold. I took everything that I have learned from bad experiences over the last decades and omitted them from this event hopefully.
The first year will be a real test. Word of mouth will be our best advertising for the subsequent years...so I have to do something qualitative and bold.
Still want to hear more.....keep typing.

Early 70`s on the sport compacts. You could try compact restorations only in those years. They are somewhat collectable (Datsun Z, Volkswagon), in that vein and rediculous to put wings decals on them. Let`s hope you are successful on the show scene. I would love to see another group like GG`s, NSRA, but a little more loose with the politics.

The only trophys I like are the ones from the drags, you can makeum look pretty but do they go isn't that what RODDING is all about? I have no intention of putting my 41 in any show unless it is on the 1/4 or 1/8 mile.

As for trophies..If you HAVE to give trophies, I'd go with giving Top 5,10,20 or even 25 awards... 1 or 2 in each class so everyones content for the most part. Ya get into this "Best of" stuff and ya hear the "My cars better than yours" crap, and thats where things go sour in a hurry when the one bad apple in the bunch throws a tantrum similar to a 3 year old and then the rest who didn't win that thought they should jumps in and next thing ya know their fist fighting (seen it happen too many times). Most of the local shows around here (even larger scale events I'm starting to see it at..) are swaying from giving 'em out to the "Best Of" and the 1st 2nd and 3rd stuff, in each class and either giving everyone a trophy or nice wood plaque with the event dash plaque on it to everyone when you register, or not giving any at all. Either way, everybodys happy. The Trophy Hounds go to the shows where they give out a gazillion $9.00 hunks of plastic, and the low key, in it for the FUN, rodder heads to the run where ya dont have to worry about politics and complaining. As for cash awards to the Best of Show, I'd leave giving out long green to the experts at ISCA..IMHO. Moneys gonna net ya problems just like trophies do..it's called GREED. One thinks their better than no other and all hell breaks loose.
I DO like the "Ya gotta drive it in" deal...Then again, that might cause a problem with the "I never drive it more than 15 feet and thats in Neutral to get it on and off the trailer" crowd. Your bound to have 500 trailers right outside the gates unloading, and that might cause a problem with traffic flow. Worse case cenario, keep the trailers in a designated area far enough away from the show grounds so this dont happen and let 'em drive 'em in (motel parking lot or somewhere, where you dont have to worry about crowding the show grounds or anywhere CLOSE to the show grounds with tin boxes). To go along with trailer parking, If you chose to have registration at a local hotel, make sure the lots really really big so you can put the trailers in their own little corner in the "Back 40" and still have PLENTY of room for the registrants to park so they can get their stuff, or should you want to throw a kickoff party at the host hotel, all else fails and space is a problem, send 'em elsewhere to park around town if you cant set it up with another local vacant parking lot that'll provide nothing but trailer/truck parking. I've gone to York, and other large scale runs from day one, and at the host hotel, every other spots taken by a trailer and truck which in reality takes up 2 spots, and it gets annoying..ya get 500 or so cars in there and say 75+ trailers, next thing ya know your runnin' out of parking space, and the "excess" is forced to park somewhere else and walk over. From what I see during the Baltimore World of Wheels "Trailer Queen Nationals", ISCA must designate a parking area for nothing but trucks and trailers, cause thats where everybody that towed theirs in, ends up. It works for them, I cant see why it wouldn't in this case.
As for parking everyone in designated areas (rods in one area, customs in another etc...) that just might bring on some problems, as most come in groups, and if it's got to be split up, your bound to get a ear full from more than one. First hand example, 12 years ago 35 of us from the area ran to a rod run about 50 miles from me, together and had all intentions in parking together and having a fun day....the show "promoter" (County Cops and D.A.R.E) swore up and down we parked in our different class groups...didn't go over well, and we all left and hit another show/parade that day and had a ball! Let 'em register in the class that works best for them (Pre '48 Rod..etc), let the rods and older stuff park where they want, with whomever they want to in the rod/custom/muscle area of the grounds, and let the ricers and lowriders do the same in their neck of the woods, wherever you decide to put 'em. And should you let folks camp, this'll keep 'em all content. This way they can all have fun together, without being 300 yards or more from eachother.
As for stuff to do....I'd strongly suggest a Cruise In early Thurs. evening (say 4-7pm) then a Kickoff Party Thurs. night (from say 7-11 or 12) before the show gets rolling Fri. AM. A Parade/Poker Run Fri. & Sat. late afternoon/evening through town, Dances nightly, Kids and Adults games (even some driving games would work..like Jousting, Slalom Course or something neat that you dont see all too often), Door Prizes all weekend, and even a couple auctions held during the awards presentation would go over well, especially if the money from the show goes to a worthy cause and it's not pocketed like what happens at most others.
Put all this together, and I think you'd throw a damn fine car show!
Just my .02 ...................

Open, honest opinion: Dump the Import Rice Group.
Carlisle had a BIG problem, and L&F pointed out, and, they are a very well repsected venue to hold shows. It's just a totally different crowd that you cater to. It's typically looked at as older people just not understanding the younger genertion, or appreciating their rides, but, I am closer in age to this "rice crowd" than many street rodders. I see it as a culture, not just car hobbiest. That whole movement is best with it's own shows, for that purpose. You will avoid a chance of chaos, and turmoil by simply excluding them. It's a shame to have to view it like this, but, it's been proven over and over.
Would I attend a show like this: NO
Why- Not the Import crowd alone. The show you are describing, to me, robs the very vertues that attract me to the street rod hobby, and, facilitates the very reason that I despise it so many times: Professional Judging. If every person is to build a car to his own taste. If every car reflects the builders personality. If indeed the typical street rodder owns his car because it fits his or her taste, what's the purpose of judging? Who are they to judge? I don't care how many points my car scores. Does primer get points? "My, nice primer, I see the technique used to apply this coat of primer is very unique. Most likely Rustoleum, 22 oz. areosol, perhaps even sprayed with the can inverted. I shall award 500 points for this revolutionary, breakthrough, extrodinary primer job."
In general, I avoid open shows with Imports and Trophy Hunts with Power Parkers.
Everything else sounds marvelous.

Have a couple of parts to your show. The "competitive ones" who hunt down trophies....Have a judged area for them and charge more for them to enter. After all, They have the bucks to be competitive, It`s all about ego with that crowd, So lets see how deep they will dig to go for that big trophy and cash. Next, The rest of the rodders can enjoy a great show without the compitition BS by having an area for them just to hang with thier peers. Of course, Charge them far less. You could have a suprise top 5 awards for them like apreciation awards. Be diverse, Have trucks, rods, antiques ect. But be real, The ricers are more trouble than it is worth. It`s just the lack of respect for others that they have to work on. It wont happen so forget it. You will never be able to enforce the "no trailer" law, Their "competitive" spirit makes them just lie about it. We have shows around here that do just about what I said here, But they do have a trailer or furniture class where they have their own area. I find these people to be pathetic crybabies. Well, I hope your show goes off super, Sounds like it just may be a real gas.

It sounds like an interesting change of pace for a car show, and it I lived close, I would probably attend. I like the idea of professional judging as opposed to participant judging (if you must have judging) because it is more objective and the judges know what to look for. I have been horrified by particpant judging because of the lack of knowledge and the cronyism that exists. I stopped attending shows in my own town and at certain other shows for that reason. The ricer crowd doesn't bother me, and as long as they are monitored and obey the show rules and do not endanger anyone, I say let them be who they are. Although I would never want to get into their world, I do enjoy looking at their cars.

This sounds interesting. Being basicly a Ibuiltit myself kind of guy that seems intriguing. I have no desire to compete against the mega buck rods out there. But the whole car show thing is a turn off for me. I'd rather drive it than set yourself up like the animals in a zoo.
Anyway back to your question, an open show with divides would be a great format for the visitors who only want to see certain things but still open for them to choose.

No trailer cars? Damn, I just bought a trailer so I could tow my Stude or Rodmonster with my motorhome to the shows. You know me, I'm a cheap bas*** and the motorhome saves me from the greedy hotels. My cars run and I have the road rash to prove it.
As for the show,,,,,I would come. Seperating the classes would be neet. If you're not into antiques, or muscle cars, then don't go to that area. I'd like to see a beater area too. Ya know, it's the guy with the well used rod. Dave

A few of the local shows here went away from trophys years ago and i feel it was a good move. What is done is they give you a number and take your name at the entrance, all numbers go into a box , then through out the shows numbers are drawn at random and announced in sets at quarterly intervals during the show . The prizes are unique items donated by sponsers or bought from vendors who showed up to support the show and from local yocal businesses right at the location where the show is being held, say if it was in a shopping mall parking lot you buy your prizes from those inside that mall and not from some faceless corporation in assbend, inuvik ,make the local yocal aware that your purchase is for the show also. Once all the prizes or gift certificates have been amassed they are set out on a table for viewing during the show along with a business card on some items .The prizes are numbered and those numbers go into another box, when you hear your entry number drawn you send a kid , your ol lady etc. up with your entry number and they get to draw for a numbered prize. This system was started to prevent turn key cheque writing clowns from beating out guys who have spent years banging their heads on their individual expression of automotive interest. Spectators and exibiters have access to ballets usually 3 votes only to keep it easy to remember and they vote for 1) Best of show 2) Most unique 3)Wildest and craziest ,these votes go towards obtaining one of the three best prizes that have been set aside from the main prize pot. Judges only judge the cars for there own personal vote they instead judge which three best prizes should be set aside for the 3 votes. The 3 vote ballets are tallied up an hour or so before the show ends, all the other prizes have already been given away by this time, just the remaining three left so people can go at the end and not have to hang around long. As for the import dudes with hockey puck haircuts, fotunately here they seem to be alright and fit in ,the secret seem to be to let the big dog in that group be involved with the organizing side of that segment of the show so they are corraled by someone one who understands their world and can have other deciples keep a lid on things, never seen a problem other than the stereo vibrations from that crowd here though. Hope this is of some help.
