Hot running 350 at highway speed

Just spent quite a bit of time on nephews 55 Ford PU updating suspension, drive train, wiring, etc. The engine is rebuilt 1977 SB 350 chevy, bored 40 over and he chose a larger cam, but, not excessive. We put in 175 deg. thermostat, running stock 55 radiator, that was pressure and flow tested(at least that's what the radiator shop said, but, it is old. Engine timing is correct, we added a home built shroud with 2700 scfm puller 16" elect fan. Engine does well at idle, but, starts to heat up above 200 deg on the road. Water pump is new.We have add-on trans cooler mounted in front along with A/C condenser(A/C is not in service yet). Need your suggestions. I have already told him a new radiator would probably be the next step, as he plans to use as daily driver.

Awwwwh-shucks there ED!

Usually if things get warm going down the road and not at slower speeds or idle it's either the lower hose is collapsing limiting the flow and/or better yet a too lean carb! Especially after doing something to the engine that affects the volumetric efficiency of the engine and that carb was NOT changed to accomodate the changes....or just plain new. Do a jet/rod change and then see what happens.

Also about fans in front. Depending on the design, fans in front are a smiggin less efficient that in back and unless you are running fans with massive shrouds the "blocking" effect is minimal. In fact, airconditioning condensing coils are worst at so-called "blocking" the front of the radiator. I run a 16" in front of my 57s radiator as many tri-fivers do with radiators in the V8 position as the sole cooling fan and even when pushing things way above the speed limit and using lots of power (like 120ish) the radiator is cool as can be. Conversely I was nervous as I could be ;)

Bobby,
I experience the same thing, I can put around all day long and even idle for long stints but when I get on the highway, my temp starts to creep up, not excessive but to around 210 or so. Mind you, if I run below 35mph it hovers around 180. I think I have isolated my problem to lack of airflow due to my front mounted pusher fans. At speed they block airflow and actually cause a rise in temp. I could probably take them off seeing that I am running a stock clutch fan also.

Hope this helps
Eric

When I used to race dirt stock cars, alot of guys that had "hot" experiences used to do what is called "Burping" the motor.Where'is you simply get the front of your vehicle up in the air as far as possible and then fire it up for 5 minutes or so with the radiator cap off, then shut it off.The existing air pocket of hot steam will make it's way to the top of the radiator. While you still have it in the air, fill it up with antifreeze.Your motor has now been "BURPED" no more steam pocket playing with your temp...... Your fan is wired backwards. Switch the positive and negative leads to drive the air the correct way. If your not sure turn it on and see if it is blowing air out of the front grill.

Hey, the Honda Goldwings do it...from the factory. The two fans actually run backwards, pushing air to the front of the bike. The fans supposedly don't run when you're going over 15mph. Go figure.

Had that problem with my 37. It was too lean.
Check the plugs.
