'66 El Camino needing motor. Remember das old vette with 327/365 motor. Thinking about trying to build one. Anybody with the correct cam, head, piston, and intake combo. Remember STRICTLY STOCK. Also whats your thoughts on using a large journal?

I had a 327/365 vette engine it was the 1965 style . It was a fun reliable street motor . It was basically stock except for stainless steel intake valves , competition balance (8000 rpm) the intake was an edelbrock TM1 (tarantula) holley 800 D.P. The best change you can make to this particular engine is replace the stock solid lifter cam with the 1st design Z28 offroad cam or short track cam as some people refer to it ,part number was 3927140. I pinned the rocker studs to use that cam. The one weak link to watch for in that year of 327 is the rod bolts as they are only 5/16 make sure you have good bolts. The large journal is a better way to go for strength as they use the 3/8 rod. They dont rev the same as they earlier ones though they almost seem lazy compared to the small journal 5/16 motors.

If I remember right the compression on that motor was up there a tad in the 11 to 1 range. Good bye pump gas!
I would definitely do the hydralic lifter thing too.
Strictly stock may be a pain the ars!

I built one of those engines for my '59 Chevy Impala 2 dr ht back in the late 60's. It had forged 11.25:1 pistons, 2.02 FI heads, forged crankshaft, and a solid lifter cam. I thought the cam had too much duration and not enough lift so I went with a Dempsey-Wilson solid lifter cam that had more lift and less duration and an Edelbrock manifold with two AFB's. That car really rocked! What I would suggest doing with that engine is substituting a CompCams XE262 or XE268 hydraulic cam and lowering the compression to 9.0:1 or 9.5:1 with iron heads. You will be much happier with the final results.
