Motorhome

Hey! I'm looking at a 29 foot Pace Arrow motorhome being sold here by a wholesaler. Outside looks good for a 1980. The aux generator works fine as do the 2 roof AC's. The inside looks clean with average wear, all appliances work, and it sleeps 8. It's powered by a 454 too. Is there anything I should look for (since this will be my first MH) before I plunk down $3500? Dave

Will it clear the garage door? LOL. Can't help you there, Dave, I've never had one.

Couple of thing to look for Dave. First, remember, this thing has all the comforts of home,AND,it has all the problems and maintenance of homeownership. Check out ALL the plumbing(leaks or repairs),all the holding tanks(fresh water for mold/leaks and the potable water tank for any leaks/damage).Make sure all the body mounts are good and that the roof doesn't leak ANYWHERE! It is not uncommon to see the roof leak down the rear or side walls and cause serious structural problems.Have someone else drive it down the road, while you ride in the back and watch the walls for any excess movement or flex. $.02

Yeah a couple of turbin heads that own a couple oil wells, or a very rich girl friend. Doubt if you'll do better than 6mpg unless you have a strong tail wind or being towed. LOL Check the doors & door openings for wood rot. Good luck.Maybe the croozer will tow ya w/the duece. heh heh heh B-O-B****DSRA

Hate to say it Dave but a MH is like owning a boat...A boat creates a hole in the water into which you throw yer money...A MH does the same thing only it creates a hole in the air!! Gotta figure that that 454 will get ya maybe 8-10 MPG on a good day so when it comes time to fill up that 50 gal tank after 200+ miles and how far yur traveling, yur eyes may water some! The day I got rid of my 28 footer with a 275 HP Dodge 413 that got 8 MPG ( and I think it did it in the driveway too!) and all of that insurance you'll pay for when it's sitting still, I was so happy I went out the next day and bought a Ford PU and put a 1/4 mil miles on it and bought a pop-up to pull behind it...never had so much fun then...Don't mean to rain on yur parade but thats from an ex MH owner!!!

There are two times you will love your used moter home....When you buy it and when you dell it. Be careful and check everything. There is usually a good reason why they sell for under 4 grand. Sometimes renting a new one is a better option, No maintainance, upkeep or storage to hassle with. Get a few friends in on the rental and it ain`t all that bad.

I just bought a 78 Winniebago with a 440 in it for a little less than that.
Everything everyone said here is true!
I got 7mpg coming from Conn with it.
Check the entire ceiling for rot, especially around the roof vents, etc.
Check the walls & floor under each window, and the back wall where it meets the floor.
Try all the appliences, especially make sure the fridge works. EXPENSIVE to fix! "mine had a new one in it"
I was looking for a travel trailer when I found this. Since I was going to buy a generator anyway, for a little more I got the motor home.
My kid is having a ball remodeling the inside. New celing, tile, carpets. Got seats out of an astro van for it. Put a big stereo in it, and still haven't spent $500 yet.
I got a 57 Buick grill for it. Putting spinner caps and making fender skirts for it.
If I decide I don't like it I'll make money if I sell it in the spring.
Now is the time of year to buy. They go cheap 'cause no one wants to store them.

So far I've found 2 that are cheap and local. The other one is a 440 powered 78 Execitive that the guy says needs a valve job cuz it pops thu the carb. I might check it out to see if it's a diamond in the rough. Next stop is EBay. Is there anyone here that is very close to Rochester NY? Dave

Thanks Charlie, it's on EBay at the moment. If the bidding gets out of hand, I won't trouble you to look. If I get one, will we be power parking them in Syracuse? Dave

I saw the MH with the carb poping problem yesterday. Real nice floor plan for a 32 footer. No beds in site. They all are hiden 'till ya need them. The engine has had to many "other guys" look at it and try to get it running. Now it's time for a replacement. $3000 and $100 to tow it home,,,,,,still looking tho,,,,maybe another one soon without all the work. Dave
