How much horsepower.....

How much horsepower would my 350 be kicking out. I have the following:
- 350 truck block on 4 bolt mains
- steel crank (not balanced)
- bored 20
- flat top pistons
- 268H cam
- stock heads (920 casting with heavy duty springs in em)
- edlebrock performer intake
- edlebrock 650 CFM carb
- hookerheaders

what else can I do to the engine to get more horsepower, I want to get close to 500 horsepower out of it without going to a blower or NOS. Once I hit the 500 mark, then its time to put a blower on it.

My mechanic figures I have about 325 horsepower....but you guys guess and tell me

Chadly

Heads will give you the biggest bang for the buck. Some AFR heads will flow strong but will cost close to $1000.

thanks a lot, and i figure my compression is about 9.5-9.75, cause it runs a hundred tiems better on 89 octane

Go to the Performance Forum of www.chevytalk.org and post this question. Some of the guys their will run it through their computer simulated dyno programs and give you specifics. Next to this website, that one is my favorite.

I've got the old "Desk Top Dyno" program (in DOS!!) and put it somewhere that I can't find it anymore...it used to be on a floppy.. I understand that the new version is very worth having as it performs a number of functions and figuring HP with a close guess at VE will get ya very close..I've been looking for a used one at garage sales but no luck...guess I'll have to go and buy (sniff!) one!!

I might be out of the pocket for awhile as tomorrow morning at the obscene time of 6AM I go under the knife again for updates to my '88 bypasses...not looking forward to it...the last operations were sorta emergencies and I was on "funny street" pills when told and I bet I sounded like the old Hippy from the hills when I opened my mouth and just said,"whatever knocks ya out!" c ya'll later!

Not knowing your exact compression ratio and VE numbers is a big SWAG at best. But to give it a go here...and if you are running 89 without problems (pinging) I have a hard time believing that it's much more than 9.3 to one CR with the cam you specified and we don't know the deck height and head gasket volume etc.

The paper calculation looks like this...

HP = atmos press X cubes X VE X peak power rpm X CR/ 792,000 (a constant for gasoline)

HP = 14.7 X 353 X .92 X 5500 X 9.3/792000 = 308hp

MIke has done it again!

What the limiting factor here is the VE of the engine. Upgrades in heads, intake (Performer just okay) could put you in the 330+hp region.
